As seen in this article, including the official press release by Asustek, they will be officially inputing the Merom (Core 2 Duo) processors into it's line of laptops. They're essentially initiating their complete transition towards Core 2 Duo and in the near future drop the current Core Duos altogether.

YAY! Can't be that long now can it? Around late septerber for the earliest ones? Gives me some time to decide which would be best for me also. There shouldn't a big difference in price should there? I remember reading somewhere that the Core 2 Duos are around the same price.
-
Yeah, the Merom processors are priced EXACTLY the same as the current-gen Yonah processors and as the word of mouth goes, coming from ProPortable, they should begin to ship in September, and only til Early October which they should be massively manufactuered and shipped to the states.

Yep........ Oh and I read a comment on LL asking why they're not going to use XP 64 on these systems and the answer is simple..... XP 64 is pathetic and Vista is only going to be 3 months away......... There's absolutely no need to change up the OS on a handful of systems for such a short period of time.

Glad to see some of the C2D's coming out. I was just about to buy a new laptop but decided to hold out a little longer for these and I am glad I did.
Now I just have to find somewhere in Canada to buy them when they come out. -
I am quite sure i will get a Core 2 DUO F3J, they look so sexy. I wanted a 17 inch, but oh well.
-
Excellent, thanks v.ex.ile for the link.
The R1F looks pretty slick! I spotted the "Hot swappable ODD/ Super Multi" on it. One of the main reasons I was first attracted to Asus was their modular drive bays. Good to see they are still producing notebooks (or tablets) with this awesome feature. -
Under the V1's specs it states:
-
Yes, if I recall correctly people were wondering if that was a typo or not. -
wow, i like that R1F. anybody know if it will get a dedicated vid card?
-
Anyone know what the resolution on the 15,4" V1 is going to be? I hope it is nothing pathetic as 1024x768!!
-
In Europe it's WSXGA+
-
if the RF1 has a good graphics card i'm gonna buy it, if it sucks i'll consider it. BUt it must be a good price.

The R1f should have intergrated graphics.
Usually, for the Core Duo, the suffix 'f' = intergrated, the suffix 'j' = dedicated
edit: typo -

The V1J in European countries comes with a WSXGA+ and comes in High specs and low specs. Ofcourse different prices.
Many North American resellers are pushings ASUS to give us WSXGA+ for the V1J.
The R1F will not have dedicated graphics. -

It's interesting that for the R1F and F2 series they list support for both Core Duo and Core 2 Duo support (even Core Solo in the case of the F2) while the V1J only lists Core 2 Duo and not Core Duo. May be a hint that that's the preferred configuration and that it isn't that far away.
BTW, what the heck is a X1450 in the F2. I've never heard of such a configuration unless ATI is letting manufacturers ship with overclocked GPUs. Usually nVidia is more lenient than ATI on factory overclocking. I suppose it could be an ATI response to the Go7400 VX, which I believe is an overclocked Go7400. -
the R1F will definitely be hot if it has dedicated graphics, but is the "180 degree" turning hinge susceptible to long time-use wear and tear? Also how much is the R1F and the V1j going to be? I've heard V1j starting at 2000 US+

Hmmm.....doesn't say anything about the GPU... -
yeah i saw that too, even the official Asus website does not list the GPU, nor the price
-
well if it has the "F" designation, then it is highly unlikely it'll have a dedicated gpu, which generally carries a "J" designation. i.e
Z62F = integrated graphics
Z62J = Nvidia Go 7300 -
Woohoooo! (thanks also to Empulse for answer).
Well, it seems I have a new laptop. Love everything about this laptop. A 17 incher tempts me (I love large screens) but being in grad school, I will haul this laptop around A LOT so that might not be the best idea (also have a large LCD at home). -
My need only rests on Yonah chips, when are they going to get cheaper, anyone knows?
I'm interested in buying a W3J, but prices are still high. May be the release of Merom chips will help to stop my drool going. -
Prices won't drop much IMO.
But nothing is certain
Asus officially announce its Core 2 Duo Laptops.
