so like, I wonder when Justin will be getting this bad boy in stock? Loving the heads up LCD display that Asus has in this prototype machine at the Microsoft WinHEC conference. Of course since this hardware feature will be reliant on Windows Longhorn, and that's not coming until end of '06, I guess I won't be able to pre-order this thing anytime soon LOL.

That's sick..... Looks like it's based on a W5.... I have never actually seem pictures of that prototype, although it's also not the first prototype I've seen with that type of heads up display. I think that is going to be something we're going to see in the next year and half....... in one way or another. I just hope it can be done in a more minimalist way (don't like the hump there on the front)
Thanks,
Justin

no doubt, the hump is ugly and how are you going to explain to users it's 1" thin on the edges but in the middle 2-inches due to a "hump". we'll need "hump" dimensions, and that'd just be a pain.
here's another concept laptop LCD being shown off in an Asus notebook out in Seattle. no hump on this one, just flat.

I think it's pretty cool...[8D]

i'd like much more minimalistic too. it'd be really cool if asus would adopt organic electroluminescence, like sony uses on their new MP3 players: http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start?ProductSKU=NWE507&Dept=audio&CategoryName=pa_flashMemory

thats pretty hot..... I did a mod once with a little lcd for tv watching purposes that internally hooked into the s-video out on the M6, and basically didn't change the thickness of the panel, because there is a little bit of room under an m6 lid...... although I haven't ripped a W5 apart yet... that did seem thick compared to the next image above... but then again, the W5 is more like the S5 which has much thinner panels and much less room. That hump probably isn't much at all... just looks it because it's on such a small computer.
Thanks,
Justin

What the hell's a Longhorn machine?
Microsoft needs to die. We don't need Longhorn. I downloaded it and installed it on an old computer (not technically legal...). It looks nice and fancy, but I don't see why we need a new version of Windows. I haven't really read about it so maybe I don't know of some advantages it has over XP, but it looks like an updated version of XP with a pointles sidebar.

Well they are building systems that will take advantage of new stuff that longhorn is going to allow you to do........ They have designed notebooks around stuff like this all the time. If longhorn is going to be so amazing and actually built from the ground up..... then it may be able to show off the new OS by building systems that exploit this technology....... now does that mean that little lcd panel couldn't have a software program written for it and be retrofitted into a current machine running xp... no, not at all. If it makes people want to buy a new computer and embrass a whole new OS... wish them luck, thats the hard part.
Thanks,
Justin

Oh, there's no doubt that if it weren't for microsoft we'd all be able to still run a p2 system efficiently.... but it's also not some giant conspiracy (or is it?).....

Well, it is Microsoft.. and there are lots of people out there that eat up anything that Microsoft throws at them. They will still make money. Now, that is the reason that I like to keep all my options open. I have XP for all my windows based applications, but I still use my linux. Novell have come along way in open source support and you can find any kind of desktop/network/business applications under their logo.
It is always good to remember that most open source coding is done independent of hardware. Meaning that, open source is never designed with the concept that machines will have to be designed to support their software. Right now, most laptops out there will not support longhorn.. on the other side the latest Novel Desktop (OS and GUI that performs just like windows.. and it has a Mac look) can run from a Pentium II.
Sorry for the rambling.. [:I]

Well that depends on your definition of "conspiracy".. LOL.. []
Let's put it this way... Who do you think will be more upset if Microsoft stopped at developing "hardware-hungry" applications.. (the ones that need bigger GPU's, HDD's, faster CPU's..).. the end users or SONY, HP, TOSHIBA, ASUS, DELL, FUJITSU... etc ??? []

I know.. I know you are right..
It is discouraging tho (to me at least) .. is pretty much like the way oil company's are still making billions. I mean, while people are still lining their pockets with $$$ from fossil fuels, there is never going to be a good effort to move on to more environmetally friendly alternatives. With todays' technology we should be able to move on AIR !!! []
In any case.. I do enjoy the look (and specs) of the W3V, and if I keep on working with linux base software.. this baby will last me another 5 years easy.. []

Well..... I don't know..... marketing is pretty effective...... someone like Asus could continue to pump out new designs on current platforms if need be....... Personally, I think that "the cpu makers" would be the biggest hit.
I mean... come on.... who in their right mind is going to cut over to longhorn before SP1? Of course, I will..... but I'm not going to put it on my huge workstation setup that I use for production graphic design work and things that I NEED to be able to count on..... but as far as people who are going to buy completely new systems just because the OS came out.... The smart people might not do that, but people who want to keep up with the Jones' and always want to be the early adopters are going to get them. They're going to keep the industry going. Frankly, without new hardware, getting someone to come upon a WHOLE new OS with just the same old systems out there is going to be a harder sell....
Thanks,
Justin
