anybody get one of these puppies yet? i am getting mine somewhere this week. anybody? opinions? review?
-
i got mine last friday. ive tried both xp and vista on it. so far vista runs smooth. Just have to spenda full day or two tweaking vista properly.
i hate repeat hate the buttons. Also dont like the keyboard layout.
As for gaming it has done great with everything ive tried on it(fear,neverwinternights2, age of empires 3).
The palm rest gets hot. fter some gaming it can be really hot.
Also i can hear a high pitched nose coming from the rightside palm rest sometimes.
Theres alot of flex in the keyboard.
On the good side everything runs really well on it. its fast and seems effortless to do most tasks.
the look is nicer then i expected.

Thanks myshkin, but damn it gets really hot?
i was hoping it can run cooler. oh btw what kind HD u have 7200rpm? what about weight(do u feel comfortable carrying it around?)
-
Satdog - I got a seagate 7200rpm hd. Yes it gets hot. Its not horrible unless gaming or doing other intense applications for a decent amount of time.
The weight isnt an issue for me at all, but i had a huge laptop before this. If you get a 15.4" laptop i think most fall into the 6-7lb category. -
I had this notebook for about a week. Its great. What myshkin said is true. The keyboard flex a little more than I like. I have no complaints about the layout. The arm rest does get hot but tolerable. So far, it's done everything I throw at it. I installed windows vista business in there and I find it quite responsive. The LCD is bright and clear.

anyone else have this? I have no idea why people aren't talking about this notebook when it's another cheaply priced DX10 notebook alternative to the compal.
-
damn that blows, i was really hoping that the palm rest can stay cool but anyway, i am getting 5200rpm 120gb HD- do u guys think i can save some battery life coz of this? sorry i am so impatient
can somebody do an official full review? (i am noob in lappys) -
ya i know, may because it has a 8600GS instead of 8600GT? i dunno , in my case i picked asus coz i didn't like the looks of compal(all black). All i intend/play is CS:source- i am not a gamer
-
still it's perfect for that 1100-1200 price range. If you get a 8600gt with the compal you're going to be easily hitting that $1300 mark. I really wish I had ordered the compal when it was cheaper, but because of the price I think i'm going with this asus (I think I can order by tomorrow, yay!). Btw, the all black looks amazing, you just have to look at the right photos. Everything usually looks good in black =p.

Yes the price increase from both powernotebooks.com and xoticpc.com a few weeks ago. I'm going to probably buy from powernotebooks and I'm just going with the standard 1284x800 resolution because of my budget. I'm going to just upgrade to dvd burner and put in a wireless card. I may also upgrade the hd to a 120 gb 5400rpm.
-
nice, very similar to mine , what cpu?, i went with T7100 (should be enough for me, i think)
-
I just received mine from GenTech. <3

Planning to run more benchmarks and perhaps write a review... but so far I'm absolutely delighted with my purchase. It came to about $1215 before shipping.
I haven't noticed any unusual amount of heat with the system at all. The palm rests seem fine for me (yes warm, but still). Been running WoW on max settings, and it handled another game I'm beta testing -superbly-, with much higher system demands.
I think the price difference to pick up the T7300 was worthwhile, it wasn't a huge difference and the overall price on the system is super-reasonable. This ended up being the "Well I want *some* battery life" compromise to the C90S and the "I can't afford that with the specs I want" compromise to the IFL90.
S96S FEELS sturdy as heck to me, display is beautiful, and the case is pretty awesome. A nice warm metallic color, kind of like titanium. -
I just ordered with the t7100 from powernotebooks.com (answering satdog). I hope that wasn't a bad move. I did this because I would get a 120gb hd instead of a 80gb hd. If I went with the t7300 processor, I would have stayed with the 80gb hard drive. This was all so that I would stay in my budget. Anyways, I'm guessing that the 7200prm seagate hd is the component that may be running hotter. I hope it doesn't get too hot and just stays warm. I'm going to be ordering a 1 gig of ram to include with the gig of ram that I ordered with the machine. So far the comments sound good. We need more people who own this notebook to comment on it. I know more people than this has purchased the S96S!

Alot of people are waiting for the IFL90. I am pleased with the notebook. The display is nice as stated by Implode. I got mines from Gentech also. Ken was pleasant to deal with. Went with the t7100 and a 120gb hd. I really don't care about the 7200RPM because that's just more heat. I rather have battery life and a cooler notebook. It feels alot more sturdy than most other notebooks specially Dells. It is a little bigger than I expected but not heavy. I installed Vista Business. Does anyone know what is the Infineon TMP or something like that? I'm just curious what that is.

aaaaaaaah
i feel so much relieved, for day i thought i made a bad purchase and i was panicking (coz of the heat thingy) but i still haven't received mine from xoticpc. I will report with my honest personal opinions too
. I think for $1137.81 with shipping
and plus 3yr warranty parts and labor next day paid shipping included all is well worth it for me , (t7100,120GB 5400rpm,wireless,2GBcorsair (1 will add my 1GB that i bought for 20bucks)
I strongly think and hope the heat issue is because of 7200rpm HD, does the HD reside right below the right palm? -
i'll maybe try to contribute something (maybe Source in game frame rates) and benchmarks from other games. C'mon I know more people have purchased this notebook!
-
Satdog:
Yes, it is under the palm rest. The price your pay for the laptop and the features you get, I think it is worth it. Hope the 7200 won't heat up much. If it is a little too hot for your liking, pick up a slower spinning hd and use this one as a external. -

the tpm isnt that useful, i just uninstalled it
unless u really want to secure all your files -
I installed it on Vista but I it gives me a error. Maybe I am missing something. I'll see what I can come up with this weekend.
-
uninstall your camera support and drivers - it's really working -
The left palm wrest almost doesn't get any warm, while the right palm wrest gets quite worm while gaming, but it's far from being so hot, that you get uncomfortable
most of the time the fdan is off, it turns on only while doing heavy gaming, but even then it's very quiet.

Yeah Im going to be ordering one tonight from rkcomputers.net Im just about bareboning the entire system. Im just concerned about the keyboard flex, heat, and battery because I will be using it for my college classes.
4 Gb ram
T7500 2.2 ghz
160 gb hdd @7200 rpm
prowireless 4965
dual layer dvd rw
vista ultimate
Im getting it for 1580 with all shipping and tax.
Im still hesitant though... could you give me some feed back -
Keyboard has some flex, I cannot compare it with others, but it really has some flex. Although I'm geting used to it, it's not that bad. There are no heat issues, the laptop is pretty quiet and gets only a little warm. The battery life is also good, with some tweaking you can get ~4 hours with a 9 cell battery.

hey guys we have our s96s owners lounge let us discuss any questions/problems in there.

I just ordered mine from GenTech for under 1000 bucks minus the OS. Awesome deal. The keyboard is not bad, but I absolutely hate this weird ctrl and fn key swap. I haven't gotten the fn key to even work yet. The right palm rest doesn't get toasty hot, but it does get rather uncomfortable. I think people are playing up this TEEE sound. I have it, and I can barely hear it.
Edit: Gentech shipped it out in 3 days too! -
may be i have good hearing
