    http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/02/asus-to-split-oem-business-look-out-hp-dell/

"Brace yourselves old school PC players, Asustek has just unveiled their plan to become more competitive. Like HTC before them, Taiwanese Asustek Computer will begin pushing their ASUS brand front and center. To make this happen, Asustek's OEM business will split from their branded business under the new names of Pegatron (PC-related manufactuing) and Unihan (casing, modules, and non-PC goods) starting January 2008. Trouble for the establishment, maybe, but nothing short of good for us consumers."

    Pegatron?? Sounds like Megatron...
I like Asus better, hope they dun change the name.

Hrmm, the split is a good business move (or not), but the naming of the brand, well suck...

It's like a fantasy version of transformers. Megatron turns into Pegasus. Unihan is some sort of unicorn.

Their original name was spinned off from Pegasus, Pegatron is kinda....I see a robotic horse that can transform from a horse to a robot with a spear as a weapon. I think.

We'll just see how they do then.

Not a bad move. Those buying motherboards and other components probably care more about quality and performance than name (Pegatron and Unihan are terrible!) so keeping the Asus name with the branded unit is a good idea - better name recognition and our laptops will still be Asus laptops :)

All I can think is that those names sound better to the Asian market...but aren't they trying to court the NA market?

Ya the asus name comes from pegasus. So pegatron comes from that.

Possibly they will start using the pegasus symbol then.

Well youve got to understand the asus name makes no sense in english either and its an english word( well its greek). Its just youre used to it and you assume its a foreign word.

I like Asus its well known as a quality product, the name has a certain legacy of quality... I hope they don't loose that.

The name Asus will still be used on their own brand of laptops.

Pegatron (PC-related products) and Unihan (casing, modules and non-PC goods) will be their OEM/contract manufacturing businesses so you'll only see these names if you're buying a motherboard or something like that.

I think they should still use the Asus name for retail branded motherboards and components (gfx cards, etc). Its such an established name that it would be a shame to change it. I think what it meant is for like ODM manufacturing the name was changed from Asus to Pegatron. So like when Apple orders its next 5 million MacBooks, it would order from Pegatron instead of Asus. Which is still the same company, just under a diff name.

I like Pegatron, btw. Does anyone else see that Mustang transformer car plus a horn and wings?

It's clearly a move from the higher ups from possible 'pressure' from other brands, especially ones that hire ASUS as their manufacturer.

This is the case for ASUS, and was also the case for Acer a few years back(like 7-8?) before they split into various different 'forms' such as BenQ(now known as Qisda), AUO, Solectron, Wistron and Hon Hai.

Asus is to split because clients like Apple, Dell, Sony and Toshiba have criticized the company’s double identification business approach, under which Asus offers contract manufacturing and also sells own-brand solutions that compete against products it makes for third-parties, and threatened to reduce orders to Asus.

The chairman of Asustek confessed that contract manufacturing operation is different from brand-name operation, stressing production scale and capacity, capital, vertical integration as well as management. He is reported to have said that after the separation the company’s contract-manufacturing operation will be free from the burden of confronting its brand-name operation.

So the abandon of the Asus/Asustek brand name in its own retail notebook market is a must in order to satisfy its other clients.

Hmm.. Well, this was in the works for some time. I remember speculations that the spin off branded notebook division would be called ASUSalpha.. Pegatron it's, then.

Read the press release. The name is still Asus for branded laptops:

The Asus division would continue the bulk of the manufacturing capacity, in addition to serving as the label for their desktop and laptop lines

Unihan Technology Corp. would head up the contract-based PC manufacturing functions.

Pegatron Technology Corp. would handle non-PC manufacturing.

I think I would take Pegatron over Assmobile =P

For the record though, ASMobile is pronounced "Ace Mobile"
