First off, I am using an Asus G1S, bought a few years ago through BTOtech.
Alright so I am sitting in class (as I type this), my computer started having some funky video problem when I was checking something in WoW (boring class, so I entertain myself)... anyhow, I get back on the net and try to figure out what this "Display driver stopped responding and has recovered" error is...
LOW AND BEHOLD...
When I check my device manager, somehow I have a 9500m gs installed in here... when I bought this thing I made sure I had a 8600m gt in it. I should damn well know because I had it customized with 3gigs of ram, my 8600gt and a different hard drive through BTOtech. I had to send it off to Asus though once for a repair, I think last year. The screen kept blanking out. No one else has had any contact with my laptop.
I am pissed... Did I get royally screwed or is the 9500m gs comparable tot he 8600m gt? If it isn't comparable or better I am going to raise hell with Asus, as I had no knowledge of this and when I get back home I am going to find my service report because I am sure as *&$*#$)(#&$)(#&$ that there was no VGA swap listed.
I think this now means that installing the VGA driver off of their website = fail? Cause it is for the 8600gt?

for one, the 8600GT had an issue in its manufacturing, and any 8600GT you got would've eventually died the same death your first one had. secondly:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Graphics-Cards-Benchmark-List.844.0.html
the 9500m GS is listed as a bit higher than your 8600GT. -
According to Notebookcheck, the two cards have the same number of cores, memory bandwidth, and clock speeds. They also both came with either GDDR2 or GDDR3. If the memory version is the same, it should not make a difference. If you traded a GDDR3 for a GDDR2, than you lost out. I am not sure which memory standard Asus used for these cards, perhaps someone else here can help?
As for the driver, you should be able to get the latest Geforce driver direct from Nvidia or get a modded driver from http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/ instead of using the version from Asus. -
Thanks for the responses and help. I will check out laptopvideo2go. Going to go and hunt down new drivers.

i'm having great luck with the Nvidia driversfrom nvidia.com, those have worked well lately now that they actually support mobile gpu's.... might want to try there first, it's the easiest option as they are ready to go for our laptops.
And yep, should be very comparable performance wise, so should be atleast as good, if not better!
Asus swapped my VGA? *anger*
