"Asustek Computer may beat Samsung Electronics to become Dell’s fourth contract maker for notebooks, joining the ranks of Quanta Computer, Compal Electronics, and Wistron, the Chinese-language Commercial Times indicated today."

Here's the link to the full article www.digitimes.com/systems/a20051101PR203.html.

I didn't see any references to this article when I searched just now. My apologies if it's already been posted or is not appropriate for this forum.

    Wow, cool link.

Can anybody explain this quote: "According to the paper, Asustek’s timeline for spinning off its branded and manufacturing divisions will shorten from three years to less than two years, as contract makers for Dell are not allowed to have own-brand businesses."? What does this mean for the ensemble line?

I believe it means that nothing will happen to the Ensemble line itself... but rather, a separate line of notebooks which Asus is intended to be responsible for will come sooner than originally expected.

@ zazonz: LOL... Lexus? I was hoping for Porsche.

Well, it is an interesting move...yes, I concur with zazonz that it will probably be used for their higher-end models.

Let's just hope Dell doesn't start rebranding W3V's, Z70va's etc...I don't think they will - Dell is big enough that they can pay to have their own design.

This is easy actually... because Sony has been giving them a hard time as well...... Asus will simply start another business.... maybe call it Asus Notebooks... whatever....... they are also going to do the same with the barebone models that we currently use. Starting early next year the barebone models will have their own website so no to confuse them with the ensembles.
