So I was talking to an Asus rep about my Asus Security Manager problem and he told me to reformat my computer and don't use Windows Update. Go to www.windowsupdate.com and download only the essential stuff. He told me that Windows Updates sometimes installs updates that conflict with Asus programs and can cause the programs to not work anymore.

Does anyone else do this method?

    a) What is the problem? You never stated it.

    b) Given the choice between an ASUS utility (known to be buggy and poorly writtten) and a Windows update, I would always go for the latter (and uninstall the utility). Unless it is really, really essential.

You can always check. Reinstall, make a restore point, then install updates (in batches or all at once). If the utility stops working he's right. And then you can restore to a point before the updates.

But if you miss important security updates due to this... see above.

I uninstalled the Asus security program once I got my computer and haven't had any problems. As far as conflicts, I can't help you there since I removed most/all of the asus software on my computer.

Question is... Do you NEED the ASUS software in the first place for what you do ? And secondly, the tech guy is probably paranoid. Just go ahead and update, I say! :D

He didn't mean run updates through Asus Update Live, he meant download them directly from the Microsoft website instead of doing automatic updates.

The problem that I am having is the Asus Security Protect Manager is not working. He said there could be a conflict with something that an update could of caused. Yes, I really want this program as it enables me to use the fingerprint read for log on and also for the Security of encrypting files and saving passwords and form fill outs etc.

My problem is more detailed here:

From your post that's what I thought you were talking about.

I hope hope you realize that , no matter what some customer support person tells you , ANY software encryption is no match for hardware encryption & , depending on your needs , that's what you should consider. It's very easy to get a "picture" of ones face/fingerprint & defeat the security. It's fine for family , friends , ect but using a password is better than all of the above.

Or, if your camera/fingerprint reader breaks it can cause some major headaches.

Boy aint that the truth. You'd probably be looking at a restore at the least & hope that fixes it.

Of course I know using a password is extra secure, but that is not the case. I paid for the fingerprint reader, I want to use it. And it's not the fingerprint reader that is the problem, its the Asus Security Protect Manager that is the problem. To access that program, you can use the fingerprint OR a password and from there it will allow you to encrypt and unencrypt files and also save passwords.

    Never doubted your wisdom.

Hope you get it to do whatever you want it to do.

Given your requirements, isn't another software available for finger-print-based security? I.e., an equivalent to the buggy ASPM (always reminds me of BDSM, this acronym :D)
