It's already confirm a few months ago. A8Jm (maybe i m wrong on the model number) will use it as well, but i would rather they used the nvidia 7700.

    luna: It's the A8Jp that uses x1700, and A8Js with Go7700

Bah this isn't so much the "next" generation as the "almost-next" generation. Wait until the X1800 becomes standard on 15.4" and under notebooks, then it'll be the next generation.

The x1800 is never going to be standard on 15.4" notebooks.

Sorry bout that, i m not good at remembering asus line...

X1800 aint but probably X2600 will, which presumely has the same power as the X1800 (see history, 9800=X700, X1600=X800, X1800=X2600???, all r normal version, lets not talk bout GTX and stuff, just to be clear)

    Here's what has happened:

Generally looking at performance laptops, 14" and 15" laptop are using mid range gpus:

First Gen-------Second Gen--Third Gen (Now)--Fourth Gen (in the future)
    X600 - x700 = x1400 - x1600 = x1700 = (New Series to Compete with Nvidia 8XXX)

    6400 - 6600 = 7400 - 7600 = 7700 = (New Nvidia 8XXX series)

Note: Most laptop will continue to use Second gen GPU's than the Go 7700 or X1700.

The X1800 and 7800 and higher GPUs are for bigger sized laptops and that are more geared to gaming. The smaller laptops like 14", 15", 15.4" will not be able to keep those GPU's cool enough for them to be placed in a chasis of those sizes.

However, once technology reaches the point where GPUs are cooler and more power efficient we can expect better performance and bettery life.

    I think the g1p will use a x1800 to 7800 level gpu.

there is a desktop dtr line that is cooler from nvidia, its called gs. its in the e1705 and toshiba 17 inch.

Where it is different from the 7900 gtx is in not only its stats but the cooling system used.

bleh the original link has the x1700 256mb in a 17inch, that's not that good of a card for a 17inch

it says it's lightweight, but i think that isn't really an issue if you go for a 17inch

Does anybody know/suspect when the x1700 will be available for the W3J??? Though I'd like to buy a laptop right now, I could wait for a couple months before it becomes a necessity (around mid January). Do you think the W3J gpu will be upgraded by then?

Thanks for the review Empulse it goes through a various amount of information people can be interested in.

In pevelg's case he has time to wait.
With this time he can avoid getting the current W3J which is nice, and jump right into the new W3J with C2D and if it has an X1700 then you'll be happy but even if it has an X1600 you won't be dissapointed since the X1700 shows no real performance gains.

Unfortunately we don't know if all ASUS C2D laptops will be using newer GPUs but so far a handfull of them are stated to be using new GPUs like the 7700 and X1700.

Wow, thanks for that incredible review!!! The review brings up another question though: When will the Santa-Rosa be available for mobile pc's? Also, would I be able to upgrade a W3J with C2D Memrom to Santa-Rosa?

Santa Rosa is the new intel chipset coming out next year. It supports 800MHz fsb, hybrid hard drives and a bunch of other features...but it is a new chipset and would require a new motherboard.

Upgrading to Santa Rosa in an existing laptop isn't really economically feasable. You'd probably be better off selling your old one and buying a brand new one...which would probably have updated graphics/processor anyway.

    Thanks for that review.

That one at least shows its actually a few clicks faster than the x1600.

However, is the x1600 in the a8ja even the same one we have in a w3j? These are two different non english speaking models.

The chinese review actually showed the x1700 was slower than the x1600 and Im not positive that it wasnt the correct one yet.
