I love Asus (2 members in my family own asus due to my recommendations). Great machines but i find the build quality on them (particularly their keyboards) arent up to par to say Apple MBP. I find the Asus, a lot have keyboard flex and one side of the keyboard will be flexing. Anyone agree?

Hello Helpmyfriend :) Even I love my G73 I have to say MBP has much more better built. Im only one who has different brand than Apple in my family, but still im satisfied with my Asus. And I agree with you.

I have both and I must say that while the Mac is very stylish the build quality has suffered lately. I think they both have their positives and negatives but for gaming there is no comparison. Macs run very very hot with Windows games running and the fans stay pegged at 6000rpms. Very loud.

For work the Mac is perfect and the touchpad is much better than the ASUS but I use an external mouse on both so it matters not.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the comments. The Asus model im considering is the K42KR-A1. For the price you get a lot of bang for your buck. But do you guys know what the build quality would be like?

My sisters asus is fairly new she bought it last summer and dont remember the model but its a 14'' and C2D. I wasnt impressed with the keyboard on it, they seemed smaller than reg size and had flex.

I carry a small Apple Bluetooth keyboard everywhere I go so I've never used the ASUS keyboard for much. Perhaps others have more hands on experience with the keyboard.

You cant compare the whole asus branded laptop to apples build quality. Asus has a wide range of laptops. They have very well build laptops and cheapo laptops.

Comparing the macbook to the k42. The macbook will have by far a superior Build Quality.

If you purchase top-of-the-line ASUS, I don't think you'll ever be disappointed with the build quality, even compared with a unibody MBP.

As for the screen quality, that's a whole different story.
MBP screen is so much more vibrant and crisp than the ASUS displays, but that's just my experience with them.

Yep, if you want to compare a MBP, you have to compare it to an appropriate notebook.

Comparing a G73jh for example is stupid.

Also if you want to compare a MBP, you ought to compare it to a $2K notebook like Alienware. And there I think Alienware will beat it in every single manner possible except for thinness.

I have not seen a MBP with a screen as nice as my G73jh's yet.

And with Adobe and others supporting GPGPU, my G73 is far better graphics workstation than any MBP.

Not to mention my Quad Core with Hyperthreading vs a wimpy MBP i7 620. What a waste of $2,500.

Hmm. No matter what build quality the MBP has, it'll still run 20-30 degrees hotter than a comparable non-apple notebook. Apple puts so much stress on design and "pretty"-ness, that their functionality suffers.

Well is the Asus G73JH-A2 top of the line ASUS model? I have heard good things about it, only thing is the 4kb weight. Is it a true quad core CPU?

Technically the A3 is the top of the line for now, those darn XT hybrid drives :p Of course you could just buy an A1/A2 and stick an SSD in but I digress.

For a 17" lappy it is not that heavy either; the 17" MBP is 7lbs.

    17" MBP is 6.6 lbs vs. G73 8 lbs with 2 HD

These are such different machines I hesitate to compare them. As much as I love Macs for work; I will never again spend $2000+ for a beautiful laptop with weak GPU specs. Macs are generally well built and retain their value for many years but a great combo work / gaming machine the MBP is not (at least for me. The nvidia 9600 and new GT330 are just too weak for my task.

    Cheers,
