    Hi everyone,

I was wondering if other people with the W3V have noticed that the hard drive (I think) often makes a noticeable knocking sound. It's not quite the normal seeking sound that I'm used to --it really sounds like a sudden knock, which is periodic. The period is about 1 second, and it seems worse at bootup. I'm just a little worried that the hard drive is faulty.

    Thanks!

Hitachi drives do make more noise... but you may have a bad hard drive.

I have noticed that mine does the same thing sometimes when it first boots up. Not too loud but noticeable. I am attributing it to some program that is running at startup. Guess I will download the diagnostic program as well when I get a chance.

We haven't established what make / model of HDD is making the reported noises. Device Manager will give the HDD model number from which the manufacturer can be determined.

The noisiest HDDs in my experience are Toshibas (but I haven't used a recent model). Hitachi HDDs can have the head movement behaviour adjusted using the Power Booster utility. My current HDD is a Seagate and is very quiet.

I would agree that the next step is to run the HDD maker's diagnostics, but I would recommend that data is backed up first. If the HDD is dying, then the diagnostic tests might kill it.

Asus chooses Toshiba HD for all the ensemble laptops. I believe that not all the Toshiba HD have knocking sound, might be the life of HD is going to ...........!!!

What? Since when? That would be horrible. Toshiba hdd and rma dept should go under. Extremely high rma rate and extremely slow rma turn around. Why would asus do that? Why would they change from hitachi?

It's never a good idea to make a broad assumption without at least seeing two system............. the only notebook in five years that Asus didn't use a Hitachi drive in was the W2... and that's because Hitachi didn't have a 100gb / 5400rpm hard drive and Toshiba did.

Aha so the w2 has a toshiba. Thats evil. I cant belive they did this. Hope the batch they bought is better then the crap toshiba made in most of later 2004 and early 2005 during which time we used alot of their drives and to this day i am kicking my self for selling their product.
