Hi - I left a description of what I'm looking for in a laptop in the what should I buy forum but now I'm focusing on Asus. I was told to look at the W3J or S96J and I stumbled upon the VJ6 but the Asus website is down so I can't look at what they have to offer! You would think the website would be pretty important... ... anyway... I'll leave you the description I left in the other thread and suggestions from Asus (preferably with specs since I can't get them online, grr) would be much appreciated!

    Thanks!

The ASUS site isn't down for me

Did you put www before the domain? Their site doesn't seem to work sans the
    'www' prefix.

Anyways, welcome to the forum ;)

The V6j is not a bad choice, but the 7400 isn't necessarily the best GPU. Also, with the Merom 'drop-in' being a rumoured truth, getting a Core Duo now isn't a bad option. In that route, I would recommend waiting for the ASUS Z96j, it's pretty much the S96j, but, I believe, with a different chassis(still plastic ;)), BT, WSXGA+ screen and....I think thats all. It is also a barebone, so you can customize it to your needs!

Not the site itself but the link to the actual laptop models (i.e. http://usa.asus.com/products2.aspx?l1=5&l2=70). Also, what is missing when you get a bare-bones? Do they drop the price. Do you think it's worth it to wait for Merom? Will the avergae user notice the difference? Are you tired of questions  ? Thanks!

Haha no worries, it's all good :)

As for the actual units, I don't think they updated it. I think they have like 1 webmaster for all their sites :p

Barebones are the laptop, sans the CPU, optical drive, wireless card, Hard Drive and RAM.

Until the page is back up at the American site, this page on the global site should answer most of your questions. The actual specifications vary from market to market, but in Australia I've seen it with the T2300 (1.66GHz) and an 80GB drive, or with the T2400 (1.83GHz) with a 120GB drive.

As for waiting for Merom, that depends on how quickly you need a new notebook. Intel is due to launch the Merom chips in August and I'd expect that manufacturers won't have anything to market till a month or two after that. Merom should be a drop in replacement for most current Yonah based notebooks, but it will require a BIOS upgrade.

Vista at this stage probably won't be available until February-March next year, and will be available in both 32 and 64 bit versions... so either Yonah or Merom are good options. 64 bit CPUs are probably a couple of years (at least) from being a mandatory purchase.

The only issues then are that I'm stuck with a homeless Yonah processor and I'm gonna wind up paying for an OS twice. Will 64bit processing bring about a major change? I don't mind starting school without the computer and I'll probably wait for Vista anyway. Thanks!

Well to be totally honest I think by the time you wait for merome, there will be some other big inovation in the notebook world and you'll be stuck with the same choice of waiting or buying all over again. Yes it's nice to have the very latest tech, but at some stage you're going to have to stick your neck out, pull out your wallet and get something that suits you. If 64bit and an extra 20% performance increase will not make a huge inpact on your experience then why wait. For some people every second counts in their jobs, for most people they dont even come close to using their notebooks to the max.

    just my $0.02

If you are going to wait for vista there is no point in looking for laptops now. 64 bit will add little if any benifit to you. vista is way off probably 3 months into the new year. and memorom is not going to be out for a little bit. so you really need to think what you need. if you are going to wait for vista visit the forum again in 07.

    My current computer is a Three-Year-Old Dell 5150 - 3.06 Ghz Mobile Pentium 4 - 512 mb RAM - 60 Gig 5,400 RPM Hard Drive (50 gigs used though)...

It's held up really nicely and will be passed down to my brother when I get a new computer. Given that fact, I think I'll hold off. On a side note, when running the Pi CPU test, the most it reported using in System Properties was 1.59 GHz. Can anybody think of a reason why?

system properties doesnt always get it right from my experience. use CPU Z which updates in real-time to get the true speed.
