Does anyone know how good the nvidia 9300 and 9500 rate against the old 8xxx series? Just wanted to know before i buy an asus laptop.
Im guessing the 9300 compares to the 8600 and the 9500 compares to the 8600gt. Any ideas on benchmarks?

9300 = 8400
9500 = 8600 GS
9500 GS = 8600gt
9600gt = 8800gts (this is only speculation however) -
the 9 series seems to be a big letdown apart from the 9800

I think the 9xxx series just has directx 10 support

8xxx series has dx10. The big thing about the 9xxx series is the die shrinking. This is allowing for the same power in a smaller, cooler running package and is probably going to be huge for notebooks eventually. I mean, we will be able to have the 8800gts in the mid-range notebooks with the advent of the 9600gt which is a large improvement over the 8600gt which was just a glorified 7600gt with dx10 support...ho-hum...
I also hope that this gives ati a chance to catch back up with nvidia after kinda sitting out this round of the notebook gpu wars. The HD2600XT was only used in the 20.1" HP notebook and even then it wasn't that good. The upcoming mobile HD3800's will hopefully be able to bring it to the 8800 and keep prices down and quality up. -
Yep, I sure hope it's gonna help with power savings... at least ASUS notebooks need that desperately.

I have been looking seriously at ASUS, but the battery life is scaring me. I need to be able to get 4 hours when just word processing. (I can turn off wireless etc). I was looking at the ones about to come out with (M51 etc) 9500 and penryn chips. -
I have done the benchmarks of 9300M G on VX3 and 9500M GS on M51SN:

Wait are we comparing desktop cards or mobile cards here because there are different designations at work depending on whether we're talking mobile or not. The mobile 9 series will probably not be the dual GPU cards like the desktop 9800 series will have at the high end. And the 8800GTS I referred to is the mobile 8800gts in the gateway FX notebook which is a "lesser" 8800mgtx. The 9600gt for notebooks is rumored to proved performance equivalent to the 8800gts while having a similar thermal/power envelope as an 8600gt. The 9600gt for desktops provdes power equivalent to an 8800gt for desktops while remaining cheaper to buy and cooler to run. The top end 9800 cards are supposed to have 2 gpu's on a single card like the old 7900gx2 or the new radeon 3870x2.

They won't make a difference because Asus will just stick the most powerful versions into notebooks and thus any energy savings is negated because of the increase in performance. But then again, I think Asus is starting to gain a reputation as one of the "power notebook" manufacturers since I see many of them with very high specs for the price but they have limited battery life and mobility.

My personal opinion is that actually ASUS is doing something else wrong besides sticking powerful components in their notebooks. Something must be fishy with power management, or heat management (or a combination of the two). I'm saying this because for any ASUS config you will find another similar config from another manufacturer that has significantly more battery life.

Hmmmm....maybe inefficient BIOS power management? That's about all I can think of since Asus does manufacture their own boards so that would be the missing link. I still don't see the battery life as too much of an issue to me but then again I am a power user myself and I don't care much for the ultraportables. I wonder if other companies who have laptops based off of Asus boards have the same battery issues? I wonder if anyone actually rebrands an asus besides the C90.
