    Hello,

I'm looking to decide between two laptops and think I have it narrowed down between the n550jx and x550jx. They look to be almost identical minus some details. I can't tell if the details are due to one being US and the other being global, so I wanted to see if any owners could chime in.

    Display
    • The n series definitely is Touchscreen IPS display, while the x series is non-touch matte display. Is it still an IPS display? If not, anyone care to rate the display quality?

    Sound
    • The n series has the Bang n' Olufson IcePower and is generally reviewed fairly well. Can anyone comment on the x series' sound quality?

    Broadwell
    • Also, has anyone seen Broadwell refreshes of either of these models? Would be good to know.

    Thanks!

The display on that is not an IPS. The screen is alright, but the viewing angles could be better especially when compared to IPS, if that is going to be any kind of issue for you. I don't think I've gotten to mess around with the sound on that model enough to give good input on it. I haven't seen anything Broadwell for that model, or really any Asus models yet.

    Thanks, Pat.

Any comparative input you could give on the x550jx versus the Asus n550jx or a Macbook Pro Retina (simply because many people have seen/used Macbooks)?

The n550jx is going to have better viewing angles, and a little better color contrast to it, just as it is IPS. The x550jx I believe is going to have a better refresh rate on the screen. Pretty standard IPS to TN comparison. Retina screens are typically going to be better looking than many screens, but also they are on much more expensive computers typically. The x550jx is going to be a good value for the money for the specs it offers though. The n550jx is going to have some more options. I think the screen on that one does look better, in my opinion. Plus it comes with the option to go up to 16gb of ram, and comes with the speaker as well, and I know that one does sound pretty good.

So if you are looking at just the performance, with similar base specs, they will perform similarly to each other. But if you want the touch screen, or the IPS (if you are using the computer for editing / photo shop possibly), or want to upgrade to more ram, then the n550jx would be the way to go.

Really appreciate the context, Pat. Given that I'll probably be doing more netflixing than gaming, I'm thinking the IPS display may be the way to go. I headed to the MSFT store today to see how I felt about the peripherals, but I may be in contact with xotic sometime soon (for either the n550jx, the np7155, or something else)!
