I'm sure many of you probably know about the XG-station external graphics card enclosure for express card equipped laptops and were bummed when you found out it couldn't output to the laptop's own screen. I was too, but I think I found out a way that will enable the use of the laptop screen as an output device.
One day I was browsing through NotebookReview.com and I accidentally found this article about the Adaptec Game Bridge( Click here if you havn't read about it). I'm like oh cool now I can play ps2 on my computer yay!(as this has composite in through usb which i thought was pretty unique) so then i forgot about it for a while.
Next, came the news about the XG-station and then i'm like oh cool now i have something thats better than my geforce 7400 yay. But then i found out it could only output to another monitor and i made a face of D:
I went about figuring out how it was possible to output to the laptop screen and then i remembered *FLASH BACK* about the Gamestation and i thought what if i output through svideo and use this to input to my computer to my screen and then i got all excited. I had to think about it a little longer though because at first i thought that would only produce one of those mirror effects but then i realized that if you were to use another screen you would just use extend desktop and put the fullscreen game on the other screen and view the gameadapter window on the lcd screen so there would only be one physical screen and that would be your laptop [lol sry for run-on sentence]
Okay so some problems that may occur could be:
- Not enough memory
at least 256 mb for your system in order to run game adaptec
soo! depending on what game is played it would probably be best to run with 1 gb of ram at least- processor not powerful enough to run both the game and the adaptec game bridge
i'm thinking since this uses 100% of processor(according to the review)and the reviewer seemed to have a V6v which has a single core processor so!
in order to play any games dual core processor is probably essential
- resolution limited to 1024x768
so if you have an sxga+ screen thencan't use that to its full potential
For 15$ this would be a relatively good investment if you were to get a XG-station that costs >500$ (i certainly hope its less) so you can use your laptop screen
of course there might be a bit of a quality loss but at least you are able to see motion
note: the gamebridge 1400 is the same as a gamebridge 1410 except that the 1410 has a built in tv tuner for tv!costs like ten dollars more

The signal has to go out through ExpressSlot, which I would assume it'd take all the bandwidth available, and if you want the signal to go back to the notebook, it'd have to take up some bandwidth back into the notebook, again through the ExpressSlot. This is an issue, however, in the GameBridge situation, it goes back to the notebook through the USB port.
So this raises the question, will the XG station run standalone, or will it run along with the mobo as one? This is important, as will the notebook see the XG Station as part of the notebook itself(yet modular), or will it recognize it as a seperate external hardware(like a peripheral). -
Hmm well i guess we won't know the answer to that one until it comes out
-
Yeap,
*looks at calendar*
Hmmmm..... -
Weren't some of the XG-Station preview articles saying that Asus is already working on a revision, and that they are working on a way for the next XG-Station to be able to do exactly this (output video to the laptop screen itself)?
-
Yep, it's possible. I've actually looked into this in-depth. However, you will need a special piece of hardware within the notebook to receive a signal from the "XG mkII". Nevertheless, people have done this before, and if the demand justify the costs then you will see something in a year or two.
-
i'd hope not
i don't want to buy another laptop
with this i know its possible but it may not be the best solution
if there isn't anything else though i could probably just do the above -
Well, if you output the screen onto the notebook LCD, it would really kill the point of the XG Station, which is not meant to be portable.
If I had the XG station, the main goal would to use it with the laptop, and put a 20" LCD with it, not the puny screen on my notebook -
Oh i guess everybody would have their uses for it, I'd like to bring as little as possible but enough for fun gaming
My asus v6j's screen can do 100 hz it makes me drool but neways thats good enough for me and less for me to bring
im thinking of how i can use it mobilely ,universal battery to plug into it! k lul probably uses different power though -
anybody knows whan the XG station will be on the market?
-
it may be comming out in may
-
omg look at this:

^^^ for japanese to english
i've been searching for the real speed loss for some time:
-
My biggest concern would be the load times for textures.
Also, man they're really dragging this out. Release the damn thing already... -
it's suppose to come out this month, they mentioned in that article that there are a few compatibility problems with the lamborghini vx1(not being able to allocate resources) and that is nearly identicaly to my v6j
