Hi, I have an z70va and it gets really really hot.. I'm not sure if it's normal for this machine. I loaded up speedfan to check on temps and right now it's running at about 90 degrees celcius. (I am running some java apps that require some processing power at the moment, though).

Anway, is 90 degrees normal under moderate load? What should be a normal average temp? If I send this in for repair, what should I request be repaired?

I am not at all surprised with the z70. It's a very hot machine, and without any cleaning it can definately be a furnace. The problem is also the x700 which uses an active cooling fan and heatsink, however it's not accessible from any of the panels and would require extensive disassembly to clean. I would suggest you to read the CPU cleaning guides, as 90 degrees is way too hot for idle temperatures. Secondly, you may need to look into getting canned air and really blowing out the dust from the left cooling chamber where the x700 heatsink and fan is located.

Yep... or taking it apart completely down to the X700 fan,and cleaning that as well.

interesting.. I'll find time over the weekend and I'll open the machine up to clean up the dust.

BTW The CPU is on the right side (Under the 90-= keys) isn't it? So what exactly is under the 12345 keys.. that's the side that gets the most hot to the touch.

CPU is towards the right, that's correct.

I think the GPU might be more towards the center of the keyboard. You probably feel the GPU heatsink radiating heat. In that case I suggest you strip down to the GPU fan and clean that as well. PM me with your email address and i'll send you a disassembly guide for the Z70.

I've got the exact same model and it use to run so hot. Even when I first got it, I had that problem. It was tolerable in the winter but torture in the summer. (No AC in my house!)

Recently I got warranty repair work done on mine. (Several things kinda stopped working at once...) I could tell one of my fans was going bad, and the one they replaced was my GPU fan and they cleaned all the vents. That seems to have solved the intense heat problem. It's still hot but I don't feel like my fingers are gonna get scorched off. Maybe you're having fan problems?

If you're past your warranty period, you can open the bottom half of the laptop and check out the fans yourself. You should also be able give the vents a really thorough cleaning that way. I've seen the instructions. I never could do it successfully as I got stuck at taking the keyboard out every time though... (So annoying, I want to get inside my laptop so bad! >_< )

Also, ChemUSA was super cool with my warranty repair. If I can do it, I want to buy from them again....
