    Hi to all z71v users,

I'm new here. I just saw that newegg.com is selling a NEC dvd burner (ND-6650) for 80 bucks, is this model compatible with the Z71V? And, is there any other model that could be suggested for a decent price?

    thanks.

To make this very simple for you...... yes and no.

ALL notebook drives are essentially the same.... it's a standard. However the rail hardware and the bezel are going to be different on EVERY laptop..... so you'll need that hardware. The only problem is you can only get that on the drives which Asus sells..... you can't get that seperately. Also, the bezel attachment points are different from brand to brand...... this is a problem since Asus uses Toshiba and Panasonic mainly - this year anyway...... and their bezels aren't going to fit on an NEC drive very easily. If you want to do the swap you're going to have to mod the bezel and come up with other ways to attach it to make it look right.

It can be done and we've done many drives like this...... but you have to have a bit of skill and a lot of patience.... and you're going to have to at least buy a combo drive for the unit so you can get the rail pieces and bezel........ so you're going to spend more money and certainly more time to use a modified drive. In the end though, you'll probably be more satisfied of what you've accomplished.

...... no problem..... better to know what you're getting into... I didn't mean to scare you out of it, but there is a lot involved.
