I've searched around and can't find a solution.
My z83 is less than 2 years old and therefore the 1 year warranty has expired. last week my laptop died. yep dead dead.
When powered up, only the power light comes on along with the fan on the cpu. There seems to be no HDD activity (ive pulled and placed in this pc and it works) The cd tray will spin, but again showing no life at all in the unit. I have had no luck contacting my reseller as I believe they went out of business. ASUS support told me to deal through them.
I am thinking I have a cpu issue, because nothing works, not even keystrokes, ie ctrl-alt delete or del to access bios etc

any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.
    thanks
    terry

Try reseating the RAM, and if you have more than one RAM module try booting the laptop off of each module individually.

Yep, if that doesn't fix it the motherboard has probably died, in which case you might be better off buying a new computer.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. I tried to re seat the ram in each module with no luck.
I think its the motherboard because there is absolutely no activity at all.
I did manage to get a hold of ASUS Canada for support. Since my dealer has gone out of business (I tried contacting them via email and phone with no luck) Asus will look at it for me, for a fee of course.
At least I will know either way where I stand
    Thanks again

Yep. If it is the MB then that's on the order of 2-300 $. Plus the shipping and handling, still cheaper than a new computer. With the drawback that it's an older computer. :)

first off thanks for your comments and help.

I sent it off to asus, and it was the motherboard. they replaced the board and cpu fan. cost was about 300 including return delivery.

once out of box at home, it booted up no problems. then I got hcontrol and atkop? errors so I downloaded all new files. I also updated to the latest version of NHC. all function keys now seem to be working.
I ran some video and games, and that is when I ran into more problems. the laptop would freeze requiring a hard shut down (hold power button for a few seconds) so I updated the video drivers, sound, and wifi drivers to boot.
same issue, once under heavy load, fan doesn't seem to kick it up like it used to and shortly after the laptop freezes up.
    what am i missing.
I have also noticed that the laptop will not run on battery, though the bios shoes the battery health at 15%. is that 15% life left or expired health?
when i unplug the ac the laptop just shuts off.

and lastly will a bios update cure any of this. my thinking is (and I try not to do to much of that) the bios and the windows istall aren't in sync. does that make sense? or will a fresh windows install fix any of these issues

thanks again to all those in advance
    terry

I will call asus support later today, not expecting much support over the phone....

Perhaps Asus shipped it with a later BIOS than what you had before you sent it in? Asus is known for altering the thermal management guidelines in their updated BIOS revisions, and that could be why you aren't seeing the same fan spin pattern as before. I would try to monitor your system and cpu temps pushing it up through load and see whether you're running into BIOS mandated thermal shutdown because the fan isn't keeping up. I'm not sure that a fresh XP install would do anything for the system freeze issue you're seeing.

15% battery should be 15% of the original max designed charge; that would be near-dead battery that needs replacement.

Does the system run through a normal shutdown when unplugged, or just turn off? As for why, two options - first, if the former, XP might be set to turn off/hibernate your machine @ 10-15% and it's Windows' fault that the nb shuts down when unplugged; second, if the latter, the battery is dead or not holding a charge with the battery's ACPI sending funny readings to the BIOS saying that it has some charge left when it doesn't (assuming that you've tried to fully charge the battery since you got it back?).

it is likely the vga fried or the mainboard. in either case it is not worth fixing becuase the service and mainboard repair will be upwards of 400$. if i were you i would pawn the parts on ebay, cpu, ram, screen, hdd, wifi, recycle the battery (dont throw it out , it kills dolphins), and buy a new laptop

    clearskies,
I have been watching both cpu and hdd temps and both the 40's range before i go into load, which i believe is near normal operating temps. I will watch the temps when i run video, Not sure if i can monitor it while gaming.

as far as the battery. as soon as the ac is unplugged the system shuts off (just as a desktop would if unplugged)

i'll play around some more and see what happens
    thanks again

    geared..
sorry, originally yes there was no life. I did get a new mobo, and am now faced with the few new issues that did not occur before the mobo was replaced. ie battery ran fine. I could watch a dvd in battery mode no problems where as now, I get nothing in battery mode.

Hi godboy, I would just try to reinstall Windows from scratch, update all the BIOS and drivers to latest.

If you still get the issues contact the repair center. I imagine (without knowing it for a fact) that there should be a certain interval of warranty on the repair. Your repair has failed, therefore they should fix it again free of charge.
