Found this over at Asus after a hint in a post from Eddie on his BTOTech forum pages (BTOForums.com) about a near-term release. Not much there about the F6 beyond specs at this point; I'm eager to see Eddie's video if he makes one upon official release.

It looks like Asus is continuing to expand their focus into the budget-midrange consumer market with the introduction of the F6 model line. The question will remain unanswered whether this will ultimately follow in the footsteps of the F8 or the F3 in terms of product quality and build. It should be a new chassis (based on the overall F-series design), since the only 13" chassis' that Asus ever had were W7 and U3. One can't predict what it's going to be like based on previous F-series budget models..... some have been better than others, but this new product (in my opinion) seems to demonstrate Asus' continued migration away from the history of the W and V series model lines. They're making good bang-for-buck systems, and some have been wildly successful (the newer M5x/M7x), but for myself I'm not sure this was quite what I had in mind as I waited for what I personally needed from the Montevina updates/new models.

I guess I was hoping for something more. Otoh, Eddie's post at BTOF also hints at a second 13" Montevina model sometime in later August --- perhaps there is light on the horizon after all, but we'll have to wait and see .

UPDATE: Eddie posted over at BTOForums that the F6 is the only model expected for the forseeable future. I'm going to go find a box of tissues now :(

Thanks for these news... Yep, pretty much the only current ASUS model that I'd consider buying was the W7 -- which I did buy. The current V-series (V1) is lackluster... and that's about it.

If the new M-series are reliable machines they may be worth a look in the future, but otherwise I may need to move to another brand.

I"m totally with you on the moving to another brand is need be. I can't understand why Asus hasn't continued with the W2 series or the W3, the W5F series was my favorite so slim and sexy, the W7 is much the same just a tad bit thicker. I alos had a V6va, amazing laptop, but nothing like that another, its a shame.

Its really sad that there hasn't been a newer Asus notebook i've been very impressed with.

Totally agree, I'm thinking moving to another brand when the time will come, hopefully not so soon. One thing really bothers me and it's available to all manufactures - the non-existent option of mate screens, with few exceptions like IBM or Apple.

    Thanks for the info though.
