I'm not knocking ALL of Asus's laptops... a lot of them are nice and professional looking.
I have beef with 2 types in particular:
- The high end G50Vts (15 and 17") with red/black and blinky lights
- The best buy "lightning cover" with blinky lights X1 and X5.
It's like they hired a 11 year old to design these laptops.
Asus: So what do you think would make our laptops "cool"?
11 year old kid: BLINKY LIGHTS!!
Asus: What else?
11 year old kid: LIGHTNING BOLTS PEW PEW!! BAM! LIGHTNING IS COOL
Asus: What colors do you like?
11 year old kid: RED AND BLACK! BECAUSE BLACK IS SO MYSTERIOUS AND RED IS LIKE BLOOD!
These cheeseball laptops should be the designs for the low end ones. The professional looking ones (like the N, F, and M's) should be the high end. I would be ashamed to own one.
They are the ugliest laptops i've ever seen. It's a shame too considering the X1 and X5 at best buy are SUCH A GREAT BUY but they had to ruin it with the design.
They would have had a sale from me... but until they make a nice high that doesn't come with ridicule from friends and coworkers, I'm sad to say i won't be buying. I'd be surprised if anyone in their late 20s or older would actually consider lugging this thing around in public.
Any thoughts?

So basically what you're saying is the people who designed the Alienware Skullcap and the Toshiba Qosmio are also working for Asus?
I agree, it looks lame, but then again I think Thinkpads are as nice looking as a laptop gets.
It's all personal opinion, some people like blinky lights.
Also if I bought one of those I would definitely spray paint it matte black. -
They have to have a market share that appeals to all customers, hence why the n, f, and m series are more professional looking.

I would have to say the most unfashionable notebook is the Ego Lifestyle. It's ridiculously priced and to me, it has no appeal in terms of both design and specs.

Skins and/or paint can change all the looks. Also, the G50 is burnt orange (looks copper) and black, no red. The lights can also be disabled or set to stay on and not blink. I work in a legal profession and have brought my G50 into the office before, coworkers actually compliment the looks. The Best Buy versions are pretty bad, but the two-tone models are actually very good looking machines in person. So far, I'm yet to have anyone see mine in person and not like it.. and I am around some very candid people who won't hesitate to tell you if it looks horrible.

But i'm sure she'll say "that's hot" -

I was not a big fan of the G50V design myself, but it grew on me.
I sold it and got the W90 and now I am very happy it has no crazy design at all. Asus has over a hundred models of laptops just because you could pick two that are not to your personal taste does not call for a thread titled "Asus's Unfashionable Taste" because thats obviously not true.
"Asus G50 Unfashionable Taste" would have been more correct. -

* sneaks in from off-toppic section *
I feel no particular need to say twice what I actually referred to yesterday in another post on ASUS subforum, so I'll be brief: I feel compelled to agree with the thread's creator fully.
EDIT: Well, almost fully. ViciousXUSMC has a point saying:
Had it not been for Drenzin that would be it for my post, but...
There I said it. Now you can stone me to death!
Extravagant regards,

I love the N80 with the 9650gt and it looks great... but there's nothing pretty and simple for 9800gs. -
-
I'm more of a g50vt x1, x5, or x6. -

The W90 is cheap for what is in it, go compare it to a Sager/Clevo, Dell, or Alienware of similar config.
-
also,what phone is that? -
I actually like G50Vt-X1 from bestbuy...
The black/orange one from anywhere else? It's alright.
The lightning bolt version? Ugly as sin.
I think that this asus is very bad looking too: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9172879&type=product&id=1218044029788
I have an N50 (black one, with the matrix-like stripes) I think it's very nice looking. -
It's a little "different", but it's not cheesy like the others that have been talked about. -
-
-
In the end, it had to go- I guess the target market were 14-16 who constantly say "booooooy" or "aaaaiight" and make those thug wanabee gestures at you- -
-
Brilliant marketing! -
I could care less what it looks like (Mostly anyway) but as long as it gets the job done I don't care. -
I hate laptops or accessories that pretend to cater to homies-
homies = good
homies wannabee = bad
Think vanilla ice or milli vanilli. This is the laptop equivalent.
Like I said- I had the laptop for a week, but it was too much fashion transgression for my profession- 'get my concession????

X-1 was not as bad looking as the X-5, if I had to pick any of them give me the X-1 any day.
Yes they are a little hard on the eyes but you cannot deny there performance and the X-5 from BB is only $900, now that's a great deal!
But overall I still wish they had better lid graphics, a nice solid Black color would have been very nice.
On the G50Vt the Red/Copper color is a total turnoff around the keyboard, what's with all the companies making gaming laptops in such bright colors, Toshiba X305 (UGH!) Gateway FX ( Orange and Black, c'mom man they couldn't pick a better color).
I'm sure there are people out there that say " I love how my laptop looks" and that's fine, but personally I just wished these laptop's came in simple plain Silver and Black.
The light's don't bother me so much because they can be disabled (good thing because if I had to look at them all day I would probably have a stroke) -
Asus should release a standard looking laptop with no flashing lights, but with high end components inside. That is, an asus g50vt with an hp like casing. That would be awesome!

I would have purchased one of the Asus high end gaming laptops if not for the disgusting design. After a while of being put of by the bright flashy lightening bolts mixed with orange peel and cherry lights, I started looking elsewhere.
I now have an NP8662 on order which is nice and professional looking as well as having high end components. With Asus it was like I had to make a choice between good design or high end internals.
Even people who own the Asus gaming laptops who posted clips on youtube admited that they hated the design. Perhaps Asus underestimate just how much orange peel has lost them sales.
Wake up Asus! -
I've got a W2V which is sexy as all hell. At the time, they were also making the V1 which I also loved. What happened to those high end thin laptops? They just gave up on that market, which is a shame. The PC market needs a foil to Apple. I can't think of any right now, tho the 13" extra thing laptops by dell/hp are nice, I'd like a 15"/17" updated version of the W2V or V1.

hey hey.. I own the G50v...
The colours honestly grow on you, and they ARE attention grabbing. How many laptops do u see with flashing lights
Haha I love it <3 -

i went and checked out the x5 at best buy the other day and its actually looks nicer in person then in pictures. but i agre, it was designed by an 11year old lol

u6 series ftw

Another reason why I think bright designs and flashing lights are a bad idea is the fact that it will make it easier for thieves to spot. Having said that, maybe they wouldn't want to steal such an ugly thing because it might be more difficult for them to sell on.
-
Flashing Lights + Red and Black = .
Teen opinion here. -
Now I have turned off all the lights, as many as I can. The colour is actually growing on me a little bit; I wish the orange was darker and more burnt, but it does provide some nice contrast with the black. However, what I really dislike is the stupid RoG stuff on the lid that I can't remove. It would have been way better if Asus stuck their logo in the lighted shield area and wiped the RoG stuff off the silver trim on the lid. I may certainly be a gamer, but I'm not in the habit of advertising it. Seriously, only a 13 year old mic spammer cares about the RoG stuff. They are the kind of people who would say things like "omg, my laptop r0x0rs. i am uber l337, i pwn u becoz i belong 2 RoG". Sheesh. The gamers you should fear are the quiet, confident ones who let their actions do the talking.
As for the X1 and X5 lid designs, it's definitely to give it the gamer look. Did Asus copy Toshiba, or was it the other way around? But even if they sold for $500, I'd never get it, just too ugly.

RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
Id much rather have the X1 lid then the X5 lid though id take black if i could. I plan to skin myne hopefully it wont look worse when im done. Id hate to disable the lights but im trying to avoid the "Look i just spent a grand" effect while using it in front of family.
-
Stopped at BB and checked it out again for the 20th time and yes I can confirm it, still pretty ugly.
But I would have to give the award to TOSHIBA (X-305 series) as the ugliest lokking laptop I have ever seen at BB -
-
RainMotorsports Formerly ClutchX2
I stopped by today, It looks better in person but i still plan to skin it. The flashing side lights in a bright room didnt even show, though in a darker room you might look like your trying to show off. Luckily those two can be shut off.
