Well, I just tried to watch a HD mpeg file on my laptop using Asusdvd which I think is a crippled version of Powerdvd 6. It would play the sound but the video had gray vertical lines all through it. It played fine in Media Player though. Has anyone tried to play a HD video file on their laptop using the Asusdvd app? I am thinking they have crippled certain features to make you by the upgrade.

Yes it is a re badged version of powerdvd, it was version4 a few years ago, not sure of the exact version they are now using but 6 sounds about right.
It is also a basic version so not surprised that it has issues with some newer formats.

i just use VLC for everything including dvds. And if you want someting to play quicktime and realplayer without using those two crappy-could-be-considered-spyware programs, you can download realalternative and quicktimealternative and play those in media player classic.

I installed XP Pro on my a8jm and now and getting around to throwing some of the drivers back on there. If I install asusdvd from the media disc that came with the system is that all it takes to be able to do the quick boot into media mode for playing dvd and cds?

I don't think you even need ASUS DVD since it'll probably just load the default media player in Windows.

the default player doesn't have DVD capability (or so I've found) but I haven't had time to play around and see what I can do about it yet.

If you default media player is Windows Media Player, you prob have to download some codec or plugin... I had the same problem..

Try this: download DIVex. I had a similar problem with certain type of mpegs, and after downloading Divx ( http://www.divx.com/ -- use the free version), it installed something that allowed me to view sound & film both in other players, as well, incl. windowsmedia or realplayer...
