I want to put more ram in my laptop because I work with autocad I get memory errors all the time because it maxs out. I was wondering if there was a way to get 4gb in it. It's the first one they came out with and the bios supposedly only supported 2gb but I have read from another forum that it's possible. Here's the post:

memory, two slots, available under a cover in the bottom of the machine
    i have maxed the ram in my G1 to 4Gb. 2x 2gb DDR2 667Mhz PC5300
32bit vista only sees 2.87Gb, 64bit vista untested yet.
i could argue the "what you get for your money" line, but i got these in return for some other stuff, so the cost was negligable on my part.

P.S. I have the vista disk but I never installed it. Should I go to vista or is that a dumb move?

You would only be able to utilize 3.2GB of your RAM if you upgrade to 4GB with a 32-bit OS. If you do want to install Vista, you will need the 64-bit version.

Also, I've never used AutoCAD, however I can safely say that Vista will utilize more memory than XP in general. On the contrary, I've noticed Vista to have better memory management compared to XP (but thats just my opinion). If you are up for a weekend project, it doesn't hurt to give Vista-64 a try. Make sure you download all the proper drivers first. :)

I just upgraded yesterday to 4gb and everything works fine. Vista sp1 rc says I have 4gb but of course it is really only using 3.something gb of the memory. I'll probably see about checking out 64 bit a little later. The G1 runs smooth with 4gb in it, so you should be able to upgrade to 4 fine if you wish. I got 2 corsairs from newegg, and don't regret it.

Hi ooskong, may I know what is your BIOS read on the RAM? Does the BIOS recognize full 4 GB or just 2.87 GB?

I would use dl memtest on a cd and run it and make sure your ram isn't faulty or reseat the ram sometimes the pins dont make contact and then there is no connection =)

btw i run autocad with 2 gigs or ram fine are you using for 3D rendering or general use? <- uses it for general use

    Robo,

looks like the bios is showing 2944 (bummer) and Vista is saying 4gb. Think I will believe the 2944 in the bios. Oh well guess I'll either pull the other one out and save it for a newer notebook later or something. But more than 2gb definitely rocks. However I never really experienced any issues with 2 either working with Maya last semester.

    Hi ooskong,

So it's the same with my W3J.... I use 4 GB and only find 2944 MB (2.87 GB) in BIOS. So that's the limit of RAM in G1 and W3J with 945 chipset.
