The whole point about ASUS being a good notebook company to me was the fact that it is an ODM in comparison to other laptop brands like Dell, HP, Sony, etc. If ASUS decided to stop manufacturing their own components whether it be motherboards, graphics cards, etc then we might just see ASUS trying to make up some of their revenue through their laptop market which could lead to ASUS trying to expand and compete in production with companies like Dell and HP. This could lead to cheaper built computers to meet the demand needs with an attractive price tag to go with it. I'm just speculating on the worse case scenarios, but I hope ASUS quality and service doesn't fall short of its title.

My understanding is that : asus withdraw from ODM manufacture.
Asus just spin off its odm sector, so that asus won't directly got the interest conflict between its client and itself.
mainboard sector would not be impacted at all.

My G51J already says it's manufactured by Pegatron:
    Code:
    # lshw | grep -iC3 pegatron
      *-core
           description: Motherboard
           product: G60J
           vendor: PEGATRON CORPORATION
           physical id: 0
           version: 1.0
           serial:

their motherboards are all manufactured by pegatron- always have been. Its just that now Asus is releasing the brand name so that it can become its own sector.

I seem to remember my G50V saying ASUS for the mobo, maybe I'm wrong. This is just the end of a long transition... I'm not really sure what the news is here except 'yep we're doin it for reals'.

    from the link above:

"As a result of the meeting, Pegatron Holding, the company that made virtually all Asus-branded motherboards notice the word /made/ as in past tense. They've been doing it for quite some time.
