ExpressCard Standard 2.0 should be able to handle the external graphics card. When will Expresscard Standard 2.0 be out? When is Asus XG station coming out?

This thing is so pointless it's not even funny.. I'm sorry but I completely fail to see the point in this. It requires you to use an external monitor, basically making having a laptop pointless. It's not like you plug this thing in your expresscard slot and instantly are able to use whatever graphics card is plugged into it on your laptop.

Completely useless in my opinion and I can't understand WHO this product is even being marketed to. I mean hardcore gamers use desktops anyway and they usually just drag them around to LAN partys and what not. College kids on the other hand generally use laptops and some buy gaming laptops to handle the newest games as well.

This product doesn't fit into either one of those categories. I suppose the only thing people could say is it gives them the option of using there laptop as a "more or less" desktop when they want to game. Still... pretty pointless especially because you can just buy a MXM equipped laptop if you want to upgrade your graphics card. Heck they even have SLI MXM based laptops now.

    /end rant.

I heard that these are only compatible with Asus laptops, but then again the shop that told me this is notorious with telling lies so they can sell you something new.

Jebus, where is this thing? Has it been officially scrapped??

If it does come out, and you could cram a 9800 of some kind in there, what kind of % power from the card are we looking at through the EC connection? I have EC34 and a new MBP with a 9600M GT, which is an ok card and very overclockable but a desktop 9800 GTX would obviously rip it to SHREDS, even at 50% efficiency o_O

If the price was right maybe. But only if you could pull out the internal PCi and throw in a better card. BUT...then again, us C90 owners are still stuck with failing non upgraded 8600's. So who can really tell what ASUS will give for flexibility.

Maybe when the Expresscard 2.0 standard comes out which will offer much higher bandwidth than the current standard, the XG Station will become a reality. Nobody knows though when the standard will make its way on notebooks though.

I'm very excited about external graphics on a notebook, its a great idea. :)

None since Jan (almost a year ago). They've made pre-production models in 2007, but nothing has confirmed for mass productions.

With 9800's now making their way into 15" notebooks and 256-bit bus available for under 1500$ (HD3850 and 9800GS and GTS) the XG station's reason for existence is gone. The power has arrived to the people at a price and size they want. By the time you buy say...a 600-700$ notebook. Now buy the XG station, probably around 100-150$ due to the advanced architecture and couplings. Now buy a video card, something probably mid-range to low high end. 9600gt at best in terms of raw performance. That's another 100-150$. Now you've spent 1000$ on a notebook that needs a bunch of additional wires and possibly another power supply and additional weight to function at a level equal to that of these new hot-books (sub 1500$ 256-bit video cards) in terms of graphics but not necessarily processor or memory.

Doesn't look too attractive does it?

I think you're missing the point of the XG. It's not trying to compete with existing graphics cards, but instead, offering better graphics performance to laptops with integrated graphics.
