Do you think ASUS will use their ensemble line models as a reference point to what they are going to manufacture for Dell? For example, for the 12" notebooks, will they use the W5F chassis for the new Dell notebooks that Asus is going to manufacture.

Wow that would be awesome. I'm more interested in the 14 inch that they would make for Dell. It would hopefully be the W3j for a cheaper price.

you guys do realize that Asustek will just take Dell's design specifications and build the notebooks to that level. They don't design these things for Dell, they just provide manufacturing capacity.

    that would be amazing
although i doubt we'd see stuff as cool as on asus, like 14" with nice gfx, cameras etc..
    still, we can dream!

I'm not quite sure how I feel about that...it's great for Asus, that's for sure.

You have to figure if these are quantity pieces, quality may suffer a little bit. I liken it (maybe wrongly...) to when Rockford Fosgate (car audio) was picked up by Best Buy to put merchandise in their stores. In the name of quantity and price point, they produced lower end lines for the chain and their quality went down across the board.

Now it's not like Asus is new to the ODM game so hopefully this won't be an issue...and if it does, let's hope it will be attributed to Dell's name, not Asus.

This makes me sad, but also makes me laugh a little. I hate Dell with a passion, I just can't stand thier computers. So, I am sad to hear that ASUS will be manufacturing for them (though I guess maybe Dell will become a little better, but it will still be dell). It makes me laugh though, that everyone thinks Dell is so great, and laughs at me for buying an ASUS (if only they knew the truth [pauses to pray for thier poor souls]), when they are buying a cheaper version. How Ironic.

That might not be the case... since Dell's last 12" notebook contract for the X1 was actually samsung's Q30. The two were actually pretty similar to each other, so there might be a chance asus would just throw one of their ensemble (or build-on) in there and rebrand as Dell

Why would you think the dell version of the w5 would be any cheaper then asus? Their best 12" now is what 1700$? If you wait till end of life ye dell has some killer deals but you have to wait till end of life.

Yeah, you really don't have to wait THAT long. E1505s with a T2300 was running for about $699 with a coupon just a week or two ago.

I really dont see this as a problem....

Asus have been makin laptops for other companies for years, and will continue to do so, the only chassis I have seen used for other manufactures is the cheaper A6 (I think it was elonix or eversham) it was funny it was in a budget review but the revewer noted that even the chasses had asus written on the bottom!

I dont think they would let their good chassis (W1, W2, W3, W5 or V6) be sold of to other companies.

Anyway I heard that Dell are planning to build a high end range of quality laptops, maybe these will be made by Asus?

Dell's high end laptops will also be manufacturered by ASUS, as will Compaq/HP's mid/high end line of thin/lights and ultraportables. The B2800/M9v is an example

This is, to repeat an often colloquial, it's all good.

The "high-end" production at Dell are business NBs, and they are magnesium alloy, 3-layer chassis designs. From my review, Fujitsu best describes the 3-layer magnesium chassis and is typified in their "S" line, I believe...it may be another one. Read their description and then read Dell's description of its chassis design...it very well may be sychophantic in tone; however, the commentary in this forum is that it is also bona fide.

...or what is heard frequently: whatever.

Anyone read, The Old Man in the Sea, recently? Great treatise on/for shark fishing and it does a background beat of patience as they await Yonah/Merom models.

This is getting some play on Engadget as well - they don't mention about the Asus deal, but that's the first thing that came to mind.

Notice the lack of a latch for closing the lid - very "Asus like"
