I am trying to find out if the atheros ar5006exs is the same as the IBM AR5BXB6. I wanted to upgrade to this card on my new z96js...

I have done a bit of research and everything seems to point to the fact that they are in fact the same card, just rebranded as an IBM card.

I was also wondering if anyone knew if there was compatibility issues with this card and other non-ibm notebooks. I was reading a previous thread and it seemed to suggest their might be compatibility issues and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on that.

Any ideas would be great :).

I got a chinese card from wireless4laptop.com the seller is from Hongkong. The card looks like it's from IBM card, so the signal is not so improved as others say on the forums. The card is not so good. It uses a special kind of driver than the drivers that most Atheros card do.

I'd recommend you to get the EGS version which supports B/G super G 108mbit mode. The A mode is not widely used or very rare . I got an EX version and it's not working well with my Z84J. It often get disconnected for no reason after you let it idle for 4 mins or wake up from screen saver. The connected Icon is still there showing that it's connected but actually it's not. I have to Disable and enable it to make it connect to the network again. I'm waiting for the REAL gigabyte card to see if it's working perfectly as expected.

I put in the INtel card from my Toshiba to my Asus and it works great... no disconnect from idle mode or anything like that. However, the card works well in Toshiba . I think it's only compatible with certain motherboard or BIos.

EDIT: just look at the card on Ebay. The model number is exactly what I got and the seller only says it works with IBM computers first.. then he mentioned the other brand. Beware those Atheros cards in Shangai i'm suspicious about the quality of it when it carries Atheros chipset name in there.
