I am planning to get the atheros card through the group buy thing for my V6Va. I am having trouble figuring out how to access miniPCI card on this computer. There are 2 accessable compartmet on the bottom, one for HD and one for Memory/CPU. How do I access the miniPCI card on V6Va.

If it involve more than simple screws, I would not get the atheros card. Maybe Coriolis can help me.

    Thanks,
    :asus:

Wireless cards usually aren't easy to access. I don't own an Asus laptop (yet), but I toshiba, dell, ibm, hp... their wireless cards require significant disassembly to access/replace the wireless card.

    It's not under the Keyboard.

The card is pretty tricky to find :)

The large plate on the bottom are for the 2x RAM and the CPU and to the right of it, is the panel for the miniPCI.

Just pop that open(No screws I believe), and remove the card(the two wires are hard to get out though), and switch it.

    6 screws in total!

    Coriolis,

Thanks for the pointer. I went ahead and bought one. I just finished installing it. Snapping out that lid is a bit scary, but everything went ok. The wires are easy enough with the right tools.

Now, my Wifi picks up a lot more access points and has solid connection to my own. I think it's a very good upgrade. Moreover, I don't have to deal with Intel Wifi driver and HControl incompability anymore.

I had to switch back to my intel card . I put and atheros 5006 and i could not get it to connect to my linksys router. Which has no issues with any other device. so i had to put back the intel just to get my laptop to work in my office. I was pretty dissapointed couldnt figure out why it was happening.

This may sound really stupid...but can the atheros wifi card or even the included centrino cards be used to gain wireless internet access anywhere through a service provider...or do you have to buy/get something from the service provider, like their own version in order to connect?

I'm just not so clear on how it works...I know you can gain access to any unprotected wifi hotspot or a home network...but how do you go about getting wireless service practically anywhere on your laptop through a carrier... do you need their specific device or can any of these cards be used?

Thanks in advance for helping me clear things up :)

Wireless internet is broadcasted through wireless routers... each internet connection will connect directly to the router and thus the router will broadcast that connection.
If a laptop is not within the projection range of a router, it cannot get a conection.

One word of warning for the Atheros, well not really a warning, but something people should know incase they panic and think they screwed their windows.

The windows logon will change and you won't be able to use the colorful logon with pictures, from my knowledge.

If there's a fix for this please do tell, coriolis? :D

Also when you're removing the two wires be sure not to tear the heads off, as that's what happened to my unit when my reseller was doing it. Of course he replaced it.

Also be careful when putting the wires back onto the new wireless card because if you don't line up the heads properly you can bend the little pin in the middle of the head.

Good choice on the card, it's like a wired connection, so **** stable.

    Cheers,
    Mike

You can get the login again by just installing the atheros drivers you dont need the client. you can also install the client but enable the old login but i can test cause i got rid of the atheros card.

AuroraS, I know that...I'm not talking about routers, I'm talking about Nation Wide networks provided by large service providers. I guess I didn't word it properly...what I want to know is, in order to get wireless internet access from a coast to coast service provider on their network...do you simply sign up for their service and use the centrino based wireless card that comes standard in all these laptops to gain access to their network anywhere combined with software...or do the service providers require you to use one of their wireless cards or devices?

What I'm not clear on is how nationwide internet access is acheived through a service providers network, and If additional hardware is needed...or if the factory installed centrino based wireless card and the service providers software are all that's needed to gain access to their coast to coast network anywhere, anytime...I know that was repetitive but I hope that makes it clearer?

    Thanks in advance :)
