3d performance is mostly same as 7.1 but i think hd videos are more smooth and there is less cpu consumption. also there was sometimes deformation on the screen momantarily via driver 6.11 and 7.1 like bad tv signal quick vibration. However with 7.2 there is no deformation so far.

Um, just wanted to give you guys the original URL. Basically the catalyst software from ATI website works on any mobilitiy Radeon. But when you attempt to download it, it instead downloads a file atimcatw.exe. This determines what kind of system you have. IF you have a notebook made by the one of the following: (sorry about the copy/paste)
Notebook Manufacturers and System Integrators Supported: Alienware
    Arima
    Clevo
    ECS
    Eurocom
    Falcon Northwest
    FIC
    Fujitsu Siemens
    HyperSonic PC
    Mitac
    MSI
    NEC-CI
    Pro-Star
    RockDirect
    Sager
    Uniwill
    Velocity Micro
    VoodooPC
Notice Asus is not in the list, so we get a "sorry this is not supported" or whatever... but
If you have one of those, atimcatw.exe will redirect you to the following website: Official mobile Catalyst. This site has the latest drivers ALWAYS... try it, it'll download the latest catalyst software for mobility directly from ATi. With XP sp2 you will need to click the yellow bar at the top to download it, but it will always be the most updated version.

ahhh so its not modded. yeah I downloaded the 7.2 mobility from ATI and installed on my a8jp w/no problems. But when I tried to set resolutions for Half-Life lost coast and CS:S, the resolution options were messed up; 1280x1024 was listed as 1024x1280. Oh well, hope asus would update thier shiznit soon.

    I have a A8JP.

I installed the mobility catalysts 7.2 and I have not noticed any performance loss over catalysts 6.8's or 6.9's. All I know is now when I have to use CCC it opens up alot quicker. (Not that I use it that much, I prefer ATT).

    - Am I doing something wrong? I have the A8JP. I downloaded the Catalyst update from that site. When I try to install Catalyst 7.2, I get this error message at the end.

Setup was unable to complete the installation.
Try to setup your display driver with a standard VGA
    driver before running setup.

What a nightmare. I got everything working after several unsuccessful tries. The VGA driver became corrupted after bootup and it wouldn't display any widescreen options.

    Here's what I did.
    1. Used a System Restore point to recover from yesterday.
    2. Reinstalled the original VGA driver from the Asus website.
    3. Created a new System Restore point.
    4. Ran the Catalyst 7.2 update.

Everything is working fine right now, but I'm still curious on what the error was. Another lesson learned. Create a System Restore point before installing anything. ;)

I don't know but it seems as though 7.2 had some driver compatibility issues. For instance, I recently discovered how to get the X1600 mob running on XP X64. You'll notice that there are no mobility radeon drivers for XP X64 on the ATi website. Basically there is a mod tool for the regular 64-bit radeon drivers which essentially adds what was in the first post to the .inf (driver info) file. This allowed me to install catalyst 7.1 drivers onto my S96J. However, for some reason or another, 7.2 wouldn't work. You may want to try 7.1 mob catalyst - see if they work. The can be found at http://www2.ati.com/drivers/mobile/7-1-mobile_xp_dd_ccc_enu_40212.exe - try it out to see if it will work.
For some reason (this happened to my friend as well) the setup prompts a restart before installation is complete. So this means that if you click "yes, resatr my computer now" when it prompts you to, (at least in my friend's case) it restarts the computer prematurely. Did you click "yes" when it prompted you to restart?

Well these drivers installed without incident(7.2's) on a Asus F3JP. 1280x768 with the FPS counter stuck at 60(screen refresh) and never dropping in CS:Source, cs_office. What was also nice is that everythign was smooth, and without any sort of choppiness. Ill edit in a 3DMarks score when i have the chance to download and install it

is there anyone that has had a quantifiable improvement with the new drivers? because I really want to install them, but since they're not made specifically for the x1700 i'm not too sure.

These are ATi drivers made for ATi videocards. They are fully compatibile with AMD Chipset videocards(including the X1700 on an Asus). You should be absolutely fine with using these drivers.

You can get the drivers straight from the ATI website with a direct link: http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst/ (for the XP x32 drivers anyway - Vista doesn't have a blocker yet)

This is the first official ATI driver including X1700 support - if you have that card, you want to use this driver. You can check the inf file to make sure, but it does include it. If you have a X1600 or other card though you might want to stick with 7.1, this one gives some extra errors that you can see in the Events Viewer.

For more info on the X1700 support see:

I have installed in on my F3Jp and has so far not had any problems with this drivers.
