So I was bored and decided to put my laptop on the operation table. This is my first laptop but I knew it wasn't too different from a desktop.
When I first got it, the load temps were kinda high, 80-82C. So after replacing the TIM with some Arctic Cooling MX-2 and Undervolting the CPU I managed to drop the temps by 10-12C
Let me tell you that unless you have time, just unscrew the screws around the CPU area just enough so you can lift the casing a bit to take off the heatsink from the inside because you can't take it off just by removing the plate that's covering the fan.
The thermal pad. Unless you have some ArtiClean in your hands, don't try to remove this pad. It was a pain in the *ss just trying to scrub it off. Towel paper w/ Isopropyl alcohol couldn't cut it, had to scrub it all with a credit card.

Here's the result.

Now some more pics of the TIM applied.

Idle temps before any modification : 60-65C
Load temps before any modification : 80-82C
Idle temps after TIM replacement + Undervolting : 50-55C
Load temps after TIM replacement + Undervolting : 70-71C

Good little guide, I think when I get some Artic 5 I will do the same.

You should try to remove all the excess factory thermal paste around the cpu, it will greatly improve your temperatures.
-
Probably a good idea to put a disclaimer, as removing the CPU heat sink and the little sticker will void your warranty.

ClearSkies Well no, I'm still here..
I'm curious what amount of your Temp delta can be ascribed to the new compound vs undervolting (which is well known to drop system temps all by itself, esp at load on the C2D chips). Perhaps you can report your current system temps @ idle/load at stock voltages so we know what portion of the reduction you report is due to the compound? This is probably more relevant to your findings.
One should also point out that load temps of 80 are well within NORMAL operating limits for a new system and do not indicate a problem with the system requiring attention, before we start seeing another rash of "is my temp abnormal?" posts around here.
Attempt at replacing TIM on G1S. w/ pics.
