So a few minutes after fiddling around with my new pricey laptop I noticed something, which I would have never expected from a laptop from this price range: there are about 0,4 inches of dead spots at the both sides of the touchpad. Wouldn't be that big of a problem, but it really makes scrolling up and down hit and miss. And of course I feel a little betrayed, when my big touchpad isn't actually bigger than usual.![]()
Is there a defect in my product or do I need some drivers to make it work whole? Or is this just a "feature?"![]()

That is by design.
They mention it: http://translate.google.de/translate?u=http%3A//www.notebookjournal.de/tests/notebooks-reviews-asus-u36jc-rx109v-nkrt-1290/2&hl=de&langpair=auto|en&tbb=1&ie=ISO-8859-1
They don't mention it: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-U36JC-RX081V-Notebook.49373.0.html -
Thank you very much for your help!
How frustrating! Of course an external mouse is a workaround and will be used for much of the time anyways. But this laptop is actually portable, so it really should have a proper touchpad if anything. And you can learn to use the touchpad quite efficiently, but it still feels like a scam. Heck, you don't buy a guitar only to realize, that only four of the strings are actually playable. Funny, how I hadn't found any reviews mentioning this before. -
Is this area large?
If it is like a match(stick) then it would be fine.
But if it is like (i don't know) ... a pen or around 1cm, then it actually is quite a lot. -
Well about that 1 cm from the right side and 0,5 on the left, so considering that whole touchpad is about 8,3 cm wide... well it's quite much. Haven't had this kind of problem with any laptop before.

That is annoying and quite unfair.

Can someone take a picture and add a square approximating the useable surface area? it'd be helpful to visualize
