I just bought a Z63A and I can't seem to install the audio drivers at all. I did it from the cd that was given with the notebook, and I downloaded the latest version available from the Asus website, but nothing works. It says that it installed all right when I run the drivers install file, but after I reboot, no sound device is found by winamp or windows media player.
I'm on WinXP Pro. All the other drivers installed without a problem.

    How can I fix this?

    Thanks a lot!

... what OS are you using and what service pack?

I'm on Windows XP Pro with SP1 (I installed SP2 and uninstalled it because it was screwing up my internet connection, but even when it was installed, the drivers installation wasn't working)

That's odd. If no one else comes up with something by Monday I'll try to ask another one of my techs and see what they say. Basically your drivers are just gone when you restart, right? I've heard of this happening before and after a format it wasn't a problem anymore.

Yup, that's right. Sometimes, a couple of minutes after booting, I get an installation-type window that tells me " all the peripherals and drivers are done installing " but it doesn't say what kind of peripherals or drivers it was installing. I'll post a screencap of that thing if you want the next time it happens.
    Thanks for all the help!

The problem is a really old one. Its not so much a problem as user error. For the azalia chipset to work right the first time you MUST have windows XP SP2 on your cd. It will not help if you install sp2 after your windows install. Your cd must be "slipstreamed with SP2" or atleast sp1a prior to installing windows. An easy solution is to get a windows cd with sp2 retail version from your vendor instead of trying it your self. I ve had the same issue come up dozens and dozens of times and its always happening to people using the original devils pirated copy of windows prior to service pack. Thats your problem. USer Error.

No way! I have Win XP Pro without even service pack 1 on the disk (but updated it all after the installation) - I had no problems with anything. However, I did do the windows updates before installing most of the drivers.

That is the exception to the rule. Trust me I wouldnt say it without just cause. The azalia chipset requires either slipstreaming or what you said but doesnt always work that way. I didnt try to go deeper then to figure out that sp2 is required prior to install. Slipstreaming is the best solution. Here is a link but it has popups ----> http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/winxp-sp2-bootcd.html

BTW you may have the hacking skills required to install sp2 on a pirated copy but its not that easy. Does require prior knowledge. Windows has cracked down on it now. Its not as easy as before.

Have you installed the UAA driver before installing the audio part? The UAA is meant for Universal Audio Architecture and is needed by the OS (w2k or xp) to use the new technology behind the soundcard implemented by Intel. If I'm not mistaken it was released after SP2 and you need to install it.

Who said it was pirated? I installed the SP 1 & 2 last June when I bought the Z63A - nothing abnormally difficult. I am definitely not a hacker – unless you count trying 50 different passwords when trying to remember my own password as hacking. :D

BTW - I wasn't trying to say you were wrong, just that it could be done.

That solved my problem! It seemed I had forgotten to install that UAA driver and after I did it, I reinstalled my audio drivers and now the sound is working fine. Thanks a lot everyone for the help!
