    Hi!
After using my F3JA for a while now i have faced a minor problem which bothers alot.
I have bought a logitech soundsystem (z3200 2.1) and have used it for two weeks. When I plug it in, the notebook speakers is disabled. And they kept on acting like this until today.
When I plug it in now, the sound still streams out from the laptop. Why is this? Also, a bright red led is shining inside the audio output in the front panel. Cant tell if it has since i bought it, cant remember..
    Help..?

Have you gone to the speakers options in Control Panel?

Also, was there any audio programs you installed?

There's a little switch in the plug that does that... it works with a driver. I doubt you killed the switch, but I could believe you corrupted some drivers just installing other software or even getting something from the web over the last week or so. I'd suggest uninstalling all sound drivers and reinstalling them.

Oh.. the red light is for fiber optics - that shouldn't be on unless you've got the output set for 5.1 or higher..... and to make use of it you need a mini tos cable which is really a fiber optic cable with a mini rca head......... but then you need that to go to a fiber optic in port on say your stereo amp or something.

Yup, that's the S/PDIF being on. I'd guess that for some reason the laptop speakers won't mute automatically, since it's not detecting an optical plug connected.

My thought would be to disable 5.1 wherever you enabled it. I know on my V6j that it is available in DVD programs, audo programs, and settings. check anywhere that you might have changed a setting, or if you didn't double check that and you might find the problem.

wow this is the exact same problem the z70va had when pluggin in external speakers. The cause was a faulty audo dj which had to be replaced. What happens if you plug in a pair of headphones? Does it still produce sound in the laptop?

Yes it mutes when i plug in headphones, which is wierd. The computer cant detect which external soundunit is connected, can it?
I have changed the settings thru properties for sound & soundunits on the cp from 5.1 (had 5.1 system before) to stereospeakers for desktop. But the red light is still there...

It's probably somewhere in the control panel. The default Windows sound settings are in Control Panel -> Sound & Audio Devices -> Volume Tab -> Speaker Settings 'Advanced' button.

I have a Z33, so our audio may be bit different, but I also have another applet, the Control Panel -> Sound Effect Manager -> Speaker Configuration wndow, where you can probably enable/disable the optical S/PDIF. My desktop which has S/PDIF uses the same control applet from Realtek and there is an option to enable/disable the digital there.

Just started having the exact same problem. Downloaded and reinstalled the drivers, tho didn't uninstall the older ones first, restarted the machine, unfortunately this didn't work for me.
The red light can be disabled by turning off SPDIF in Control Panel -> Realtek HD Audio Manager -> Audio I/O -> Digital "wrench icon". Doing this didn't solve the problem either.

Okay! So my problem is solved. After defaulting everything in the controlpanels Sound & Audio Devices I ended up with still no muted laptop. I did not bother to uninstall the drivers, but I turned of the spdif in the Realtek software, which actually killed the red light. BUT, it also killed my sound, and I mean every sound. After a quick reboot, i tried again with no luck. So I switched back to optical and there was sound. Also, my laptopspeakers mute. I think this whole thing is caused by some sort of conflict. I dont think this has anything to do with the output dont detecting an optical unit (spdif enabled). At this point I have no clue what made this (did not install any new drivers or software at the time), or how I actually fixed it.

    Hello there,
since yesterday's evening, I'm experiencing exactly the same problem as mentioned here. I have my Creative FPS1600 sound system plugged into the headphones output on my F3JC-AP024. Till yesterday everything was working ok but now, even when the FPS1600 cable is connected, the notebook speakers won't mute and keep playing - which is not good. I don't realize editing any settings, nor installing any new audio software. And, in the Realtek audio utility, on the Input/Output tab, the headphones connector indicator shows that something is connected but it is not. I hope following the instructions here will help me solve this, because it's a minor but very unpleasant misfunction.

PS: I tried uninstalling the drivers, rebooting and installing again from the original asus driver cd and it did not help.

Exactly same problem suddenly appeared with my F3JC too. I think this is a common problem with Asus notebooks. Anyone wrote on asus.com forum ?

I started having the same problem today on my F3Ja. Incredible annoying problem, especially when you live in a university dorm with a roommate. Isn't there any way to just disable the laptop's on-board speakers completely?

Daniel, you're the only one who's been able to solve it, so please try to remember what it is you did!

I cant remember doing anything other than what I wrote. I think its some kind of conflict but I have no idea how to solve it. I just tried a bunch of stuff with removing the realtech software, installing it again, rebooting, enabling and disabling spdif and so on. Eventually the problem just dissapeared. And the red spdif led was killed without me having to disable it manually.

Question for you other guys with the same problem: Is the red led inside you output enabled? Or is it dead?

When the problem first appeared the red light was on all the time. Then I played around with the realtek software, uninstalling and reinstalling it etc. but nothing solved the problem. It doesn't seem to have anything to do with the red light since thats only telling you when the digital output is on.

I needed a quick solution so I went and bought a Creative external USB sound card. Sounds a lot better and I can eventually expand to a 5.1 system.
