Average of 15* celsius drop in CPU temp. Never guess how!

So let me start off by saying this is REALLY odd. But, we are talking about the C90 so...

My configuration is in my signature, but I've also performed the following:

    1. "Vicious Mod".
    2. Arctic Silver 5 on both the CPU and GPU.

My CPU temperature used to average 65* Celsius even after these modifications with JUST web browsing. I couldn't understand why and the noise from the fans was REALLY getting annoying.

Anyway at one point last night Vista reported a low memory warning and told me to close "Protector Suite QL", which is the fingerprint reader. Doing this restored my memory and dropped my temperature down to an average of 50* Celsius!

I then fired up 3DMark06 and ran a few tests. Then I played Counter Strike Source for an hour to put the system under a decent load. My temps got back up to 65* Celsius during gaming but as soon as I exited them it came right back down to 50* average.

With this temperature I'm able to surf the web and do most of my computing with the fans barely audible and the heat is much less intense!

Anyway, I posted this for anyone else who is having problems trying to keep there CPU under 60* Celsius while doing things like surfing the web. I would suggest stopping the fingerprint reader with the Task Manager and seeing if it helps.

It made a HUGE difference for me! It could be the fact that I"m running Vista x64 and the Protector Suite QL software which Asus supplied is only supposed to work with Vista x86.

I found an Intel driver/software package for the fingerprint reader here: http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=2793&DwnldID=13165&lang=eng
which SEEMS to be working without causing any memory problems.

Just thought I'd post this for people to try/check if they are having similar problems as me. Post here if it fixes anything for you.

Nice find! It's possible that the memory problems could be using CPU/processes while on idle. Shutting it down obviously would kill that application therefore lowering temps since now the CPU really had nothing to do anymore.

    Gonna try it on mine..

That's exactly what happened to me! A good way to confirm this would be to open the Task Manager and see how much memory the Fingerprint Reader is hogging. I would do this when I noticed my performance start to drop and the temps rise.

Sure enough, the reader was using a HUGE amount of memory. Vista reporting a low memory issue and telling me to close the reader was the icing on the cake.

I believe your theory about why it raises the temperature is exactly right. It might not work for everyone, but it might be the answer for those high "idle" temps for some people.

Let me know if it helps at all, and check your Task Manager if performance drops to see if the reader is causing it.

Guys, I contacted the PQSLtray.exe company a while about a memory leak in their released version, and they sent me an updated version.
I'll look to see if I have it. I had a post about this a while back but at that time I was the only one with the issue.

The link to the drivers/software in my first post seems to work and it's stated as being Vista x64 compatible. It might only affect us Vista x64 users then.

I just found your post ( http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=174925) wish I would have stumbled across that before! Anyway, the drivers above work and this should definitely be sticked or added to an faq for us Vists x64 users. Using the Intel drivers/software has made such a HUGE difference in my temperatures, it's amazing.

What are you using for the Fingerprint reader software?

My issue was not driver but applicative. But hey, we can cover all bases.

For me the Protector suite is 5.6.2 Build 3703, that was the latest during my issue period, and has no leakage.

I have tested the possibity of apps causing the cpu to get hot many times. I just install the OS (xp, vista, vista 64) and install speedfan immediately....or install the chipset drivers then speedfan. Even with no drivers NO NOTHING it still idles around 65C for me....whats worse is that after I install all drivers and all my programs as normal its still the same temp. Sgt, I saw your post in the other topic about different voltage cpus...I wish I had known that when I had my cpu out, I could have checked which wattage I have...

The driver/software package linked above from Intel is Version 5.6.2 Build 3447. It lists as being Vista x64 compatible and I haven't had any issues with it. I just hope this can be added into a FAQ or something. Maybe a C90 Vista x64 FAQ? Until I noticed it in the Task Manager and Vista reported it, I couldn't figure it out. Hope it helps someone.

I found that when i left the laptop alone, then the memory leak occurs, and drasticly slows the computer. even if it only uses 44 megs, it still is a huge preformance hit. However, when I was activly using the laptop, even when i was just using firefox, no memory leak. anyone else have the same thing?

Interesting, I started noticing last week that the fingerprint reader software was using up memory and a high amount of CPU processes while my computer was supposedly running idle. I don't know if it was doing that before, but afterwards I noticed it was always happening. Thanks for the info, I'll give the driver package a try. I probably would've just continued to end the process through the task manager otherwise.
