Because they have a sales arrangement with Asus to get exclusive builds and discounts on volume purchases, so they can sell them cheaper to the US market masses (who value price above all else - the WalMart effect) through their retail chain. Been going on since the early G1 days..... :) :)

All around here know that better equipped versions and service on these systems are obtained from the resellers.

BB sometimes comes through with cut down models that nearly match the loss of specs with the reduced price but I have to say they did a little too much choppin on this one. GPU & Screen both are unacceptable.

Couple hundred dollars will get you a cpu upgrade, ram upgrade, screen upgrade, hard drive upgrade, better warranty, and a video card upgrade.

The G71V has a 9700GS in the spec but its actually a 9700GT as nVidia dont make a 9700GS and the marketing guys didn't double check it (or they took the specs from Asus's website rather than the side of the box). The 9700GT is actually not that bad for a general games machine, will not handle high end games but its enough for casual use.

I agree though, that is very low res for a 17" screen, thank god mine came with a 1920x1200 screen.

How do you know that? That's what people said for the 9800M GS, turns out its a real card.

    >.> you aren't happy with your 9700m gt and you think a 9700m gs would be ok? 17" laptops are supposed to be bigger and more powerful. Their just abusing the asus name to pull in more $ on this model.

nVidia have said they do not produce a 9700m GS card currently plus my G71V is listed on Asus website as a 9700GS but it arrived with a 9700GT and listed the GT on the side of the box.

The 9800GS is listed in nVidia's product sheets

As I have found out, dont trust Asus website for specs, double check the specs on the box before purchase.
