Intel/Asus just released the final version of the graininess fix for the S96J, Z96J & Z96Js. Unsure on what other fixes there are but here's the link to download. I already have it installed and noticed no differences compared to 1101 but if I noticed something, I'll post back. BTW, the Windows Flash Utility is crap, especially if you run a NTFS partition, so you will have to use another utility(which I have but didn't try) or flash from DOS,

Thanks for the heads up. It would be nice if we could see a "changes made" log between 1101 and 1104. Hmmm any ideas guys?

Why not flash from BIOS? I think most of the newer notebooks have the option. It involves the least number of notebook components, therefore the least number of points where trouble could occur.

@ Calcu --> I have never used the WINflash utility but why do you say its crap? Does it not work if you have NTFS?

Because this series of notebooks doesn't offer that option  I wish Asus would implement it though because it would save a lot of time and prevent a lot of issues,

All this version does is reboot into DOS and flash from there, so NTFS is not supported. It's not like other Windows Flash Utilities that actually flash from within Windows but I have WinPhlash that actually does flash from within Windows and works with Phoenix BIOS but I didn't try that and just used a USB Key & my old WinME Boot CD and just flashed from DOS,

hey, a simpler question, and quite possibly a redundant one. I haven't updated a BIOS before, is it as easy as downloading and installing a normal program or should I let someone who knows what they're doing do it? thanx..

You need to download the BIOS data file, and either:
    1. Download a software which will flash the BIOS onto the physical device memory.
    2. Use the option inside the BIOS (software) which flashes the BIOS onto the physical device memory. This only applies if your BIOS software supports the option.

If 2nd option available, use it. It's less prone to failures, as I said before.

About being safe. With a (very?) small probability, things can always go wrong, and you'll end up with a hardware-wise fully functioning, but actually non-working computer. Can be solved by the service guys, but I'm not sure if the warranty covers this sort of thing.

Last, but not least, if you don't need the new BIOS, don't flash it. This is always good advice. Only when the new BIOS fixes issues that are affecting you, you should update it. Don't fix something that's not broken.

what about updating from a "Beta" BIOS 1101 (Added Merom Support and Fixed X1600 "graininess") to the new 1104 supported version?
I have no apparent problems with 1101

Uh...ye i just tried this, twice, doesn't work. I used the winflash software provided with the download from Intel website. What happens is, I open the ROM file within Winflash, and then click "Flash".

Computer turns off, restarts, (i disabled quick start), so the part with all the "American MEgatrends" stuff comes up and the quick diagnostic, then it says press any key to boot..

What happens next is i briefly see Bios-ish stuff, for a milisecond, then it stops at an all Blue screen, with a Brown box in the middle, with a border with the letter "t" in it..

    lol...wtf..

    any ideas?

btw i had quick boot enabled before, and the same thing happened, I thought id try without quickboot, seeing that its been disabled in the new bios..

The reasons why im doing the update is cuz ths is the official update that incorporates the fix for graininess (there WAS an unofficial one I believe before, or it was beta or something), plus whenever i go into standby, it gets stuck booting, like the screen is blank, and the computer is unreponsive, but the power light is on..and lastly, the same issue as others, the WiFi button doesnt do anything (the Fn + F2), and neither does the Led.

EDIT --> BTw, to get outta the blue screen, I had to use the emergency shutoff button/hole under the laptop, so I hope everyone knows about that one.

The beta bios had no issues. It was pretty official, from ASUS support. Wish I knew what was different from the 1101 to the 1104. I won't be upgrading any time soon tho probably.

Did anyone who tried the new BIOS see any changes? Zep mentioned that the quick boot option is now disabled, are there any other things?

1101: Has Grainyness fix, Merom Support
1104: Has Grainyness fix, Merom Support and ?

I know nothing about BIOS, but i wish to get rid of the graininess of the screen, and understand that i need to update my bios in order to do this. i was wondering where i would find the version that i need to use, considering that i have a regular core duo processor, not a core 2 duo.

The only BIOS so far that fix the graininess issue are the 1101 beta BIOS & the 1104, which was the official release. Just follow the link in my first post to download it and in the download are the programs necessary to flash it,
