I bought an ASUS x550ca machine(DOS installed) online about 5 month back & loaded Win 7-64 bit after removing DOS. After installation of chipset & other drivers (drivers for Win-7-x64 downloaded from ASUS site ) successfully, when I wanted to install USB3 driver, system crashed instantaneously with BSOD. When reported, their Cust. care advised me to install ATK driver first & then all other drivers serially. I did this meticulously but system again crashed with BSOD when I tried to install USB 3 driver. When reported again they told me that I must deposit the laptop to their service center for fault checking which may take about 2 weeks. I didn't listen to their advise because my work will suffer for such a long period. They could have easily verified my statement by analyzing their USB3 driver's reliability in their lab, but they seems to be least bothered in such petty issues. Can any of my forum brother inform whether any of them experienced this problem from similar laptops during USB3 driver installation? Shall I not get desired speed from USB3 slot in absence of driver installation?
I also have two queries about this laptop--
    i) How many RAM slots are present in this machine? One or Two, because I want to increase memory from existing 2GB to 4GB & if 2 slots are available, what should be the spec. of 2nd 2GB ram stick for making it dual channel?

ii) Can I install WIN-XP Pro-SP3-x86 in a dual boot, which can give some life to my UMAX scanner(purely 32 bit) which was working perfectly in a 32-bit XP machine?

    Thanks & regards,

    Which driver were you using?

    It has one sodimm slot.

XP is going to be difficult to get completely working, I suggest trying to see if you can at least get it in a basic state.

ASUS provided driver CD only for Windows 8/64bit & not for Win7 & so I had to download Win-7 drivers from ASUS site. I didn't face any problem with any drivers except for USB3. Regarding XP installation, Meaker you are right. I know there would be problems because I could not find any drivers for XP from their site. So, I have to search for 3rd party drivers after xp-x86 installn. What I don't know is whether XP installation is theoretically possible or not when a higher version, i.e. Win-7 is already present.

One memory slot in a laptop is really an idiotic decision from Asus & this was not clearly spelt out by online seller. If I buy a 4gb ram, existing 2gb would be useless. Nevertheless, it was a bad purchase decision by me.

The soldered ram will run in asynchronus dual channel with any sodimm inserted so will still work. You will get double the amount of soldered ram as dual channel ram and anything above that will be single channel.
