when u lock the battery then it is locked/latched onto the laptop and cant or shudnt fall out and cant be removed.

if u want to remove the battery u unlock it then it can be removed.

it is just a safety measure to ensure ur battery doesnt fall out accidentally while using it

You will probably want it locked at all times. Most laptops have two latches, one which functions like a lock, the other like a release. If you don't have the lock on, it puts more strain on the release one and it might ruin the retention mechanism.

Also, like SideSwipe said, it could fall out if you accidentally rub the switch the wrong way.
