Is it ok to take out the battery when you are on the laptop while its connected to the AC adapter? Or is it better to leave it in?

You can take it out or leaving it in. Taking it out has a long term advantage of keeping the battery away from heat helping it hold it's max capacity for longer. But leaving it in gives you security of not losing work in case of power outage. It's a matter of preference really.

The only possible reason I could see to take it out is heat. See if it gets really warm near the battery, if it doesn't, you won't affect the capacity in the slightest. Batteries loose life due to a chemical process, so taking it out won't help it last longer. There are circuits that ensure that leaving it plugged in don't affect it.
