I decided to keep my Z71A which had not been used after I put it together. Yesterday the battery charged and lasted around 3 hours. Then it stopped charging. What could the problem be--please don't use the word "motherboard" because it is not under warranty. I did undervolt is with NHC, but very slightly. That should not affect it.

I've got some pretty basic suggestions... don't get offended if too simple.
Did you try removing the battery and possibly cleaning the contacts and make sure all the connections are tight (both the plug at computer and on wall outlet).
Also, I once thought I had an AC adapter problem when I was in a new home and it turned out the outlet was a switched outlet. Try a different outlet just in case.
Otherwise, not sure what the problem could be. If there is indeed a problem, I would lean towards the AC Adapter or battery before the laptop. If you had another battery you could try that one and rule out the AC Adapter.

I did try all of those things (partly because I have had an outlet problem once). I tried an AC adapter. Could it be a conicidence that I upgaded the bios the same day? If so, how do I go back. Thanks.

It has nothing to do with the bios. There may be a loose wire or the battery is not properly ground. Most likely you have a faulty battery. Now this isn't the safest thing to do day in and day out, but instead of using your AC adapter, try just plugging straight into a surge protector. If your battery doesn't charge then it's the battery that has the problem. Or if you have an extra AC adapter with larger requirements then your battery on your laptop try that adapter while being plugged in through a surge protector.

I read through some of the pages and pages of the thread that Darrick provided. It was very informative and doesn't make me very happy. The battery was not used for a total of six hours.
