I remember seeing a post on this forum about a battery problem someone had with the Z71 (A or V, can't remember) when used outside America....the battery just died.
Can't find the thread...but anybody have an idea what the problem was, and if it is fixed?
-
you mean this thread? http://www.notebookforums.com/showthread.php?t=94034 It seems to be that the problem is simply bad batteries and the solution has been to replace said batteries with good ones.

Holy noodle i almost allowed my self to forget about this. **** you people cant you just let it go. Just let it go and call your dealer. I start to shake and twitch every time i see battery and z71v mentioned in the same sentence.
-
+ve!!! z71v/a's battery have many problem for charging. Some of them only can be charaged to 3%, some cannot be fully charged, some are exactly die. don't worry, Asus will replace new one for the users.
-
Ok, from G2P's reply I take it that it was only a bad batch of batteries and not a bigger issue.

A small bad batch which consisted of only 2-3 dozen Z71v's made in March of 05........... Asus will take them back and so far we haven't seen any other issues with that model or any other one for that mattery...... it's not a current issue and it falls under the law of "$hit happens"..... that's what warranties are for.

A small batch.? we have swapped batteries from batches ranging 2 months appart all very different serial number. So far I my self replaced about 3-4 dozen now. Asus replaced atleast a couple hundred and other resellers if any of them offer advanced replacement replaced atleast a couple hundred. I know we sold a crap load of z71v's when they were out but it was more then a small batch. It was atleast a thousand at best. New shipments however have good batteries. Happy to say asus is helping us out with rma's and they are taking full responsibility. Contact your dealer for replacement if they care. Most dont so you have to contact asus and wait for cross ship. I think between my self and Justin we are the only dealers that offered advanced replacement and made it easy for the customers paying shipping both ways while everyone else dumped the load on asus. Just goes to show not all dealers are the same.

... One thing Asus actually could determine was that all bad batteries were in the first smaller shipment and the second normal shipment that arrived back in March.... that's really one "batch", but it depends on when those were actually sent out...... Asus doesn't get rid of everything exactly in the order they were made...... but they still said they had well under 50 that they expected to have problems.... we had only 8 or 9 out of a couple hundred of those machines that were sold during those first couple months....... I can't imagine you of all people, having 30+ bad batteries AND running into dozens and dozens of Z70va's with bad screens..... seems like you're just very unlucky... I don't know if I should pity you, or just have our guys check when you're putting orders in and make sure not to place some at the same time... -

I dont think luck has anything to do with it. Volume and sales ammounts is all its based on. We sold alot of whitebooks thus we had alot of bad batteries. We sold alot of z70vas thus we had alot of bad screens although that was defiently a bad batch in particular one batch where the first four digits were the same. If you ad up the ammount of complaint of the bad batteries just form notebook forums and my self thats well over a hundred. Multiply that by ten atleast becuase most of my customers never posted about it on forums and i am sure most people that had a reputable dealer didnt either. Countless more dont even realize they have a bad battery. I get atleast a couple bad batteries every single week with the last month being the worst. Its not going to stop either for a while becuase this has been going on for months now. You can ask Rick the same. He must have had the same ammount of bum batteries if not more xept he dont replace them he just forwards to asus which is starting to make me think of doing the same. Alot of his customers are posting on notebookforums and their answer was to call asus for replacement.
-
Rick's reasoning for having customers deal directly with Asus for battery replacements (at least when I replaced mine) was because Asus thought that the extra ones he had in stock at the time were likely bad ones, and Asus wanted to keep track of all the batteries shipped back to ensure that they understood the problem better. I'm still not really sure what "solution" they came up with, but the replacements seem to be working. Regarding the longevity of the issue, there are people who have this issue who bought their notebooks as recently as August, and there are some from the UK as well as the US.

I never got any such reasoning from anyone at asus. All I got was a thank you and much appreaciation which they show on a daily basis for handling the problem on our side without dumping the load. Like i said between me and justin we were probably the only vendors to take responsibility as we should everyone else blamed asus and pretty much hurt th reputation of both the manufacturer and the dealer. It is becuase of this that i consider my relationship with their rma dept as gold and also partly the reason why you dont see me going anywhere else despite the recent issues which i can consider major and pt a big dent in my own pocket, plus i ve been there and done that nad found anywhere else to be a compromise forcing us to write a whole new laptop warranty that nowhere as good as it is now. Until other odms guarantee the same level of support as asus you will not see me switch to any other. Between me an rick I know we had atleast 100 customers who complained of battery issues and another 200 who will complain soon. Thats just 2 vendors who sold maybee 2% of the entire usa inventory. If you do the math......

I can recall only once having a bum battery on arrival the rest broke out in the field atleast after some time. Asus as always did not want to take resposibility here to the end user but were forced to after practically all dealers dumped it on them. Dealer product dealer support. This has always been their policy. Anyone who honors that is rewarded.

... that's a good way to think about, but as Asus' premier partner, our sales volume of both ensembles and whitebooks have to be in the top 5% of any company Asus deals with....... so if you want to use your logic, we should many more issues than we've had. -
Geared2play.com Company Representative
Using the logic i say we sold more z71v's when they were out thus we had more battery problems. Not too sure about the z70v lcds as those were particular only to one lot.
-
PROPortable Company Representative
....... right, and your logic would be totally backwards. I'm done as this is a conversation that can't go any further.
-
Geared2play.com Company Representative
Either my logic is correct or asus really favors and you get a whole lot less rma bacause asus checks your stuff before its its shipped. Thats my logic. If it is backward consider your self extremely lucky to be able to sell more whitebooks and have way way less rma time and time again.
-
PROPortable Company Representative
Well the fact of the matter is we have had very few problems and have sold plenty.... We're not getting special treatment, I just feel you're extremely unlucky... there doesn't have to be logic behind that and having more problems than anyone else isn't something to be proud of because the issues are not a factor of how many you sold...... or I should say...... for everyone it wasn't... for you, techically you could look at it that way, but for it to be true it would have to be true across the board and Asus just didn't have that many issues altogether to even make it believable.
-
Geared2play.com Company Representative
Justin. They have had ALOT of battery issues. it was way more common then you think.
-
PROPortable Company Representative
Whatever buddy.... I'm going on what Asus has admitted and other than that everyone can only go on what that plus what they've had issue with...... but there's no real reason for them to hide the numbers since it was a bad batch of batteries which were the fault of the battery maker and not Asus.... and yet Asus was very good about replacing them for anyone with a problem. All I can say for sure is that issues with the batteries or even the lcds aren't really a factor of what you sold... that would have to be true for every dealer and at least I can speak for my company that it's not how it went. Neither of these issues affected entire shipments and rarely did they even affect consecutive serial numbers...... so with that, I'd have to say either luck played a part, or someone knew which systems would be bad and sent those to certain places (the later I would find very hard to believe).
Anyway.. this is gone far off topic so I suggest this ends it. -

in another few months we will have another couple dozen bum batteries replaced. That will bring the total somewhere near 70 or so bum batteries. This is not from one particular lot or shipment. As for asus. They were more then just repsonsible in handling this. They are extremely helpfull and went beyond the call to help us rectify this issue and i can assume they were equally helpfull with customers who were not aided by their dealer. All i am saying is its more common then you are aware of. Look on notebookforums and see for your self. None of those are my customers by the way. Alot of them are ricks and most are sould with no dealer support that didnt know what to do. -
PROPortable Company Representative
... what the hell do you mean in another few months you'll have another couple dozen replaced?
-

Meaning the rma for the z71v batteries are still comming in almost daily especially over the last 2 weeks. So its not over for me.
