    To provide more benchmark info of Asus laptops to help customers to make their decision, we ran 3DMark05 and PCMark05 on more than 10 different Asus laptops, we also had speed test: Calculates Pi to 2 million digits to see how long each model takes.

    For all asus branded models, we just ran the tests under standard configurations.
    For all built-on Asus models, we ran the tests under the same configurations: CPU: 2G / Memory: 1G dual channel / HD: 5400rpm.

    Besides the standard tests, we ran more tests on Z70Va and Z71V, changed parts one by one to compare the score differences caused by part changes.

    We will add more models into the comparison table.

    For these benchmarks, I assume that the lower the number, the better? I'm not very familiar with benchmarks.

    Thanks!

    Actually the higher the better.

    For 3dMark/PCMark, the higher the better

    For super PI, the lower the better

    Two more tests done on Z71V to compare IDE 5400rpm HD, IDE 7200rpm HD and SATA 5400rpm HD, report updated already.

    One small surprise, when I copied Data from external USB HD to the installed HD in the laptop, the SATA HD is the slowest. I thought I was wrong, re-tested 4 times, all the same.

    Good job marking down the numbers...... SATA is already proven not to increase anything, and your information about it decreasing speeds are totally believable because even though the system will except them.... it's converting back to PATA..... so although you'd figure there certainly wouldn't be a performance increase because there isn't a true SATA path....... a decrease is certainly understandable.

    Dunno what kind of test you are running but sata random and linear seek tests show comparable speeds to 7200rpm hitachi. A good test to run if you still dont belive is time to install windows. Sata will be proven the winner over ide 5400.

    Where are you getting this from.? Intels own diagram shows that it is indeed a native sata channel.

    Asus' own disclosure........ it's a pata channel and any performance include due to the use of an sata drive is strictly the drive itself and nothing to do with an sata channel.

    I wish it weren't so either, but Asus will stress the fact that it is sata "compatible"..... and aren't very bullish when you bring it up, they'll be the first to tell you it's not an sata channel.

    Benchmark table updated, newly added:

    1. V6V benchmark test;
    2. Asus notebooks size, weight and battery life in one table;
    3. More tests on Z71V, to compare the performance difference caused by 5400rpm IDE, 7200rpm IDE and SATA HD

    To copy from optical drive to HD, 7200rpm IDE beats 5400rpm IDE and SATA alot. We copied 589M Data to HD, the time used are:
    7200rpm IDE-------------------- 3m 12s
    5400rpm IDE-------------------- 4m 17s
    5400rpm SATA------------------ 4m 12s

    Using paired modules for dual channel will have a negligible impact of about 2-3% on 3dmark scores for the z70va. Hey its better then nothing. :)

    hehe, do you think you could update the battery life and weight numbers for the laptops to uhh...more real world values? like actual tests for them? I'm having trouble breaking the 4h barrier even with underclocking and practically no lcd light lol for the z70va that is

    I also was wondering if the battery life stats were under real-use tests or Asus' claims. For instance, I have a hard time believing that the Z81Sp gets over 2 hours of battery life with a Pentium 4.

    Acer AS5672WLMI: Duo T2300, 1024M, 100G, X1400 128M...

    BTW, it has an extremely glossy screen.

    CanadaSys,

    How to you get that annoying pop up screen for the Acer machine to go away? It moves around on the main screen whenever I scroll around, and I can never get to the "X" to close it. Maybe it's because I'm logged into our work network from home rather than a direct internet connection, and that makes my computer into a dumb terminal. There's a lag between when I type in commands or scroll around. anyway that Acer proporo is REALLY annoying. Makes we want to never buy an Acer....

    What do you guys think about the v6j result in the 3D test?

    Anyone that own it play some newer games on it? How does it stack up?

    EDIT: Does it handle new games better than the number suggest? I've been thinking about getting one, but I don't want to be disappointed.

    As I mentioned before,the vent on the right side next to the power cord is pretty warm, hot air coming out of there, right hand palm and right half of the keyboard also a little bit warm, but just warm, won't make you uncomfortable, I can hear the fan goes on from time to time, but not noisy.

    A8Jm:
    About the A8Jm, it is on ensemble side now, the 2 day visit schedule to Asus was too tight, I did not get the chance to do a benchmark test on it, I can offer a few more pictures of it, it is a light silver color, from the picture it looks like white, but it is actually not. The mouse pad is unique, not like the traditional one, has a non-metal touching area and a clicking area which is metal, this one the whole thing is one piece of metal like this:

    [IMG]

    R2H / A8Jm / W3J
    [IMG]

    W5F / W3J / A8Jm
    [IMG]

    W5F / W3J / A8Jm
    [IMG]

    A8Jm to white box?
    Now Asus Taiwan schedules 2 high end 14” gaming models on ensemble side, the W3J and A8Jm, and on the white box side, only Z62f and Z62J.

    I don’t think the white box side 14” Z62J is strong enough, but Asus USA had hard time to convince Taiwan about this, Taiwan insists Z62J is enough for white box side.

    The Taiwan notebook PM is also there in Fremont at this moment, I joined together to convince the Taiwan notebook PM to move the A8Jm to white box side, I think the W3J is enough for the ensemble side. I worked very hard on this issue, he promised to put this into serious consideration, the A8Jm should be available in a month, let’s see if he is willing to move it to white box side. From his attitude at the end of the conversation, I think we have a good chance. The current ensemble A8Jm should be around $1600USD if it stays on the ensemble side.

    S6F:
    The S6 is a collection model, Asus can only makes 500 units per month, because the leather will be put on by hand, not by machine. "How about $3000 each?", the Asus VP tried our response. It should be available in the summer time.

    [IMG]

    Lamborghini
    The Lamborghini has no price yet, but will be US$2800 at least. The video card still not decided, but should be a nVidia one. The 2 demos there have non-English OS installed, I can not read it, so I didn’t play with them a lot. It will be just a V6V + nVidia + a top cover

    [IMG]

    R1F
    13", touch-screen, finger-print rader, bluetooth, will be available in July
    The tablet will be available in June, of course Asus plans it on ensemble side, but I suggest Asus sell it as a barebone bundle with Tablet OS, this way will make it very unique in the market, it will be the only tablet customizable, this is just my suggest, don’t know what Asus thinks. Asus has never thought about a whitebox tablet, when I said this, their response is: oh, an interesting idea.

    I like whitebox more than ensemble, I like Asus has more white box models. Wish you guys think so too :) At this moment, apparently Asus is trying to work more on their own brand name - ensemble.

    Danny, will you be carrying the S6's when they're available? Will they be special order only or do you think you'd stock a few? Also, do you think they'll actually come in at 3000 (US or CAN?) or lower?

    What about the non-leather S6 models, same questions as above?
    Thanks for any info in advance. :)

    I think it is but also it depends what model you ordered, for example I got Logi V270 Bluetooth with W3j and my friend got the corded one.
    Also I would like to say that I got almost 1000 marks more in 3dm05 (47xx) with T2400, X1600 OCed and newest Omega drivers.

    I know lots of people are debating between A8Jm and W3J, I will do a brief comparision here, I am still working on them I will edit this post later:

    3Darks05: A8Jm / W3J:

    PCMarks05: A8Jm / W3J

    Battery life: A8Jm / W3J -- 2 hours 45 min / 2 hours 50 min.
    ( both mid brightness, wireless on, external optical mouse, internet browsing and typing, the time I mentioned above is the time
    I got battery low warning, with 7% left )

    Hot swapable optical bay battery and HD: A8Jm / W3J -- NO / Yes

    Also slightly taller than W3J(from the hinge)

    Layout(the keyboard is different from the model I saw before, the "shift" key on the demo I saw before was quite short)

    A8Jm has more vent at the bottom

    Viewing angles are about the same(I set both to max brightness)

    Other impressions:

    When click the mosue pad, the click sound from W3J is way louder than A8Jm;

    like the A8Jm, right half of the palm and keyboard is warm(same at the bottom), but nothing uncomfortable;

    W3J blows more hot air from the side vent and fan is on more freqently than A8Jm, but I don't feel being bothered because I don't put my external mouse near the vent;

    The screens sim pretty dim for max brightness. Is it brighter in real life and it's the camera's fault ?

    thanks for the comparison! hmm its a bit odd they both get 3 hours but the W3J has a larger cell battery. is the ATi card more battery consuming?

    The W3J will be a little longer, right now I have use the W3J with external optical mouse for 1 hour 30 minutes, it has 53% left.

    The other day I used A8Jm the same way, at 2 hours 45 minutes, I got warning: 7% left, please connect power adaptor.

    Goren, someone has came up with a small theory explaining why laptops get a certain amount of batterylife despite the components.

    "No matter what's being used, the whole laptop as a package depicts how long the batterylife would be."

    With that being said, in theory the W3J with an eight cell battery should get a longer batterylife. However, you can see the A8jm gettign close to the same batterylife. We may be talking about a difference of 10-20 minutes.

    Yes the optical mouse, plugged into the USB played a key role in determining batterylife, it seems to consume alot of batterylife, consider others here have had 3hours and 15mins without an external mouse on thier W3J.

    So looking at the package of internal components and trying to find what consumes what power and then you can differenciate. BUT wait, you guys remember that program, i think its a battery miser, that says how much WHr your using currently.

    With that program, if you set the A8jm and W3J in the same situation, wifi on, brightness 50%, and MS word open with a web browser, and P4G set to long battery, then look at the WHr, which has a higher number? the A8jm or W3J?

    Then you can draw conclusions based on those numbers, and then consider battery size to be a secondary factor.

    Thanks,
