Well, I managed to get a copy of What models Best Buy is planning to sell tomorrow.
They are:
K5OIJ-RX05 ~500
U81A-RX05 ~650 (No blue tooth)
G51VX-RX05 ~1,000
G71GX-RX05 ~1,200
1005HAB-BL ~300 (Blue Netbook)
Strange, Best Buy would not let me purchase any of their computers until tomorrow, even though another Best Buy store did sell me the U81A and the 1005HAB-BL (Which I did return for the U81A). Then again, the 3 people I spoke with had no clue how to print up specs for the K50IJ or the G51 VX, which they didn't have on display, so obviously the store I went to this time, selling computers didn't appear to be a priority. I guess they are doing better than most companies in today's economy.
You should be able to see these within a couple hours on their website. There may be others that are not going to be on display but online. I think I'll probably keep the U81A. Haven't see anything better online for the price and features. Acer Timeline series seems to be the closest thing, but missing HDMI and backlit keyboard, processor speed appears to be slower. If someone else has found something similar or the U50 with similar battery life that's on sale, let me know.
Thanks.

good looks
-
But thanks dude for the heads up- I wanted to check those out for sure before I went all-in with the newegg model. -
Yeah, it was more a sarcastic remark. Hey BTW, which model is New Egg Selling. I tried a search for the U80 but nothing came up.
Thanks. -
Hmm so if they put those models on their website, can you use the pick up at store option on something like the G51 to make sure they hold one for you until you get there? Not sure how many stores should be getting on avg but would be nice if you could do something like that.
Thanks for the info -
In theory, yes you should be able to. I was just pissed that they (Supervisor, manager and sales associate)didn't want to take the time to pull up the specs essentially lying and stating they had no way of doing that even after I said another Best Buy store had no problems pulling up the same information and then they wouldn't even sell the computers to me after having a group meeting which I guess they thought I didn't notice. Guess they need a reminder about customer service or find another job where they don't need to interact with customers? In defense, the sales associate tried to pull specs and sell the computer, just was prevented by their supervisor and manager who seemed to be too bored to be bothered.

Looks as if HP will be releasing their new ProBook S model on July 20.

Appears to be a bit heavier, but with the extended battery, battery life will be similar, unclear if it has multi-touch pad, by the time you add all the features you want, probably looking at $300+ more than the U81A, but it gives you options and the 15.6 model is available now. -
Here's the direct link to the Asus models being sold at Best Buy. Strange how if you just do a search for Asus, none of these come up. You actually have to know the model number. So here they are.
U81A: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...p=&qp=&list=n&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960
Looks as if they have a Black and Red model out, but the Red is already backordered. Go Figure. At least some of the specs are listed for those interested.

They also have this UX50. I'm not a big fan of the C2Solo, but it looks nice. -
lol best buy messed up. for the product depth for the red u81 they said it is 9.6 inches.
-
Hey thanks for the Ux50 info. I didn't even think to look for that model, although the battery life seems shorter. I'll have to think about this one a bit.
Ok, I've created a new thread to get other people's input on going with the U81A or the Ux50. http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5016279#post5016279
Thanks. -
its true that the model with quadcore don't can be overclocked like the models with core 2 duo? g71gx-a1

WTH???? AW on BB?????????
lol.... AMAZING -
if i go to the local best buy, what are the chances they would have any of these on display?
i have no issues ordering online, but if i can see and use them on display it would help making a choice. -
If you go online at BB and select store pickup, see which stores has the product available. They should at least have something on display.
BTW, the U81A is lacking the following:
Bluetooth (Neither Ux50 or U81a had bluetooth)
Multi-touch and lighted mouse pad (Ux50 seemed to lack this as well)
Backlit Keys (Ux50 did have backlit keys)
Both the U81 and the Ux50 though do have the express gate feature which gives more functions (Skype, email, etc) than say the Sony that only gives you a browser.
Adding up all the missing parts that the U81A seems to be lacking, I'm thinking I will return the one I haven't opened and wait until I can get either the U20 or U80.
The Ux50 was just a tad too big for travel purposes, although looked nice. -
Yeah my guess is stores that show "store pickup" available should have them on display. At least that's how it was in the Best Buy I went to today. I believe they had all 5 models on display but I only really paid attention to the G51 and G71. While the G51 is rather large for a 15.6" laptop, the G71 was hands down the largest laptop there and quite a bit bigger than the G51 when looking at them side by side. I'm sure some people won't mind the size of the G71 but for me, the G51 is about the max size I want my laptop to be.

Red_Dragon Notebook Nobel Laureate
+rep, thanks for the info
Also, the U81 is crazy cheap that sounds like an amazing deal........
The G71gx is priced REALLY well too very nice. -
Wow. The 1005HA is only 299?? I might be cancelling my newegg pre-order =/
Does Newegg do price matching? -
It just became available in white as well! The 1005ha that is.
-
Ok, I found Acer's Timeline series at Staples and BJs for comparison and they don't have a restocking fee that I'm aware of so I can try them out for 14 days. I've posted my initial impressions at Technurse.net if anyone is interested.

Acer AS3810T-6415 was one of the computers that I looked at before deciding on purchasing U81 at Best Buy ($649) instead. The deal breaker for me was it does not have an optical drive and the Core 2 low-voltage chip is actually on par with Atom chips. While the Acer's battery life is great, U81's battery life is almost as good (7 hr 30 minutes). But U81 has a much speedier processor (compared to Acer's UV Core2 anyways), has a optical drive and to my knowledge, cost less than Acers. I think it is such a major inconvenience not to have a DVD/CD drive. More so than giving up 30-60 minutes on a laptop that can do 7 hours anyways. What's more, I also have a netbook that runs on Atom chip, it is weighted down when you throw more than a few applications at it.
The only thing it is missing is a decent dedicated graphics card - but then, prices would have increased $150-$300 dollars and the battery life would've gone down by 1/2.
I think I'm pretty happy for what I got for the money. -
Just a note, I do believe U81A has multi-touch. I went two BB's. On one, I didn't have enough time to look around and find the place to change touchpad settings, but on the other one, I did. It had a little program where you could enable what multi-touch abilities you wanted and change touchpad sensitivity (which is important given that the touchpad isn't centered on the space, but the laptop itself, which sets it partially under your right palm ... but wasn't a problem after I changed the sensitivity).

i almost got one of these but decided i didnt want to downgrade from a asus g1s (video card just died
) with wsxga 15.4 and a upgraded t9300, plus i might go with something with ddr3 clevo m860tu with the same video card. mxm, and a wsxga for an extra 3-400. its nice cause its barebones. does anyone know if the g51 has mxm? ddr3 compatible?
-
^ ddr3 is physically different from 2 so the g51 isnt...but its proven it wont make a difference (ram, not gpu), the cpu matters much more. the gpu does have ddr3 though.
i went from 4 gigs ddr3 to 6 ddr2 and the seems 6 is better, though i have a faster cpu as well. -
Just to clarify this last post: GPU has GDDR3, which is different from DDR3.

Best Buy now has the UX50V-A1 that has been on Newegg for a while. It's $1,300 compared to Newegg's $1,400. It's backordered though...
The UX50V-RX05 has also gone down $50 to $700. -
Hi, I am also debating between the Asus U81A-RX05 at Best Buy and the Acer AS4810-8480...I love the Asus' look (I've only seen it online), the keyboard style, processor, speaker quality may be better than normal (I've read) and battery life looks good. I also like the Acer's look (again, I've only seen it online) and battery life...since I don't speak all the computer jargon, I was hoping someone could help with my decision, in case there is something obvious I'm missing about either of these. I'll be using this laptop for everyday stuff, no gaming, probably the most intensive thing I'd put it through is watching a DVD or burning CDs. Here are my questions:
ASUS: What are all the differences between the U80V and the U81A? I know there is no backlighting or multitouch (I'm fine with these!) and I've seen something about the graphics...but most of this I don't understand and I don't think will apply to me! Are there any other differences that I should know about? I've seen the U80V for $969, so I don't understand what makes the $300 difference...Can anyone back up the claim that the speakers on this computer are better than average?
Also, are the chiclet style keyboards easier to clean? It doesn't seem like stuff could get underneath the keys, and to me, that's a plus!
ACER: I'm aware of the problems everyone's been having with freezing and such, but from what I can tell, it's been solved by updating drivers from the Acer website...is this true? I've read that the processor (ULV SU3500) should be fine for everyday stuff, but I'm having trouble convincing myself to buy something, well, puny. I want my next laptop to be up to date with current technology and run as quickly and smoothly as possible...is it going to show that this processor isn't the most powerful?
I've narrowed it down to these two as the best for the price. They seem to be no more than what I need to do the job, but nothing too shabby. Any personal opinions are welcome! Thanks! -
The speakers, I've heard both sides. Some say it's good, some don't.
The weak CPU on the Acer Timeline is a definite turn off for me. It's probably okay for doing one or two things at a time. But multitasking won't be very fun. On the other hand, the ASUS's dual core CPU will get things done.
Battery life, the Acer definitely has the ASUS beat. But whether that ~7 hour battery life will be useful depends on your specific usage. For me personally, I'm heading into college where my days will be in and out of classes. The ASUS's U80V battery life fits me just fine as I can just charge when I'm out of class. -
the ASUS,with battery Savings mode on and on the web has an 7:30-8:00hr Batt life, read the specs. -
God, the G51s still aren't on sale?
I know how I got mine (lying, cheating, stealing), how did everyone else get theirs? -
Just picked up one of these puppies and, after a couple of days of use, I'm loving it. It's light, screen is gorgeous, great battery life and is priced reasonably. It's a fingerprint magnet, but can be cleaned easily.
I don't play games, so dedicated graphics is not important for me. 1080P content played with VLC media player is smooth on a 46" 1080P display connected via HDMI. Vista Premium 64bit is surprisingly snappy and the system as a whole is quite responsive and fast for day-to-day tasks.
I was eyeing the Acer 4810T model but I'm glad I picked the Asus as it almost matches it's USP - long battery life but with a speedier dual core processor. -
I bought an ASUS U81 notebook. I love it because it is lightweight and battery lasts a long time HOWEVER the sensitivity of the touchpad is driving me nuts. My hands are small and I am constantly hitting the touchpad with my right thumb or palm. How do I turn off the touchpad or turn the sensitivity WAY down. Thanks for any help
-
Did you figure out the touchpad sensitivity issue. I bought an Asus notebook and the touchpad is driving me nuts. Did you figure out how to turn down the sensitivity. I cant figure it out.

Edit; a heads up for the U81a BB owners, we have a lounge now........
