What is the best CPU compatible with the ASUS G51VX-RX05? Also, does replacing a laptop CPU require soldering?

    Huge thanks in advance!

    Yes it's the right place.

No you dont have to solder.

Quad core CPUs wont work, the X9100 is the best, T9900 is pretty much the same as the X9100 except it doesn't have an unlocked multi.

    Thank you!

I found the X9100 on ebay for around $350 CDN.

Has anyone had experience purchasing a cpu from "extremeprocessor" on ebay? ( http://myworld.ebay.ca/extremeprocessor)

I ordered an ASUS G51VX-RX05 a couple of days ago. It's the first gaming laptop I've ever bought and I am thinking of upgrading the CPU some time in the near future. I'm excited! I haven't played a game on PC since Diablo 2 was released (literaly!).

I personally have not puchased from them, but I know people on here who have. You have nothing to worry about. They are reputable.

One thing you may want to consider though. The G51Vx runs hot. The X9100 is a 45w chip and the T9900 is a 35w chip. In the end, they will both perform the same, but the T9900 will run cooler because it uses 10 less watts.

I wouldn't get X9100. it will run HOT. G51vx has a bad cooling system, and if you put in X9100... :nah:
get T9900. they're the best for ur model right now.

Nope, they are the same chip using the same tech.

If you run them at the same speeds then they will be at the same temp.

The X9100 should undervolt better since it's highly binned.

The 45W TDP is for when you overclock the X9100, if you use it stock it will not be 45W.

Sooo, what's the consensus? X9100 or T9900? I can't find a good price for the latter, so I'm hoping there's a way to make the X9100 work. I don't plan on overclocking it, so does that mean the temperature will be fine?

Is there the possibility of UNDERclocking it, to keep it at a safe temperature? Yikes, I did not know about the temperature problems before purchasing the laptop.

CPU is not a problem temp wise it's the GPU.

According to this, the X9100 is a 44w part? http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=35431

    Intel says the T9900 is a 35w part? http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=39312

Unless I am missing something? Which happens quite a bit. ;) Does the X9100 only draw 44w when overclocked, and at stock speed it uses 35w?

I would also go for the T9900 $339, there is no gains on the X9100 as the G51 bios cant make use of the unlock multipliers.

Why don't you wait for a little while and fool around with the default P7350? I've overclocked mine to 2.45 GHz 24/7.

I bought and eventually sold my T9600 because I needed money for an SSD (and ended up buying a new phone with the money...) and I didn't notice a big difference in games (especially graphically intensive ones like Crysis or Dragon Age).

There is of course a significant difference in CPU-intensive applications like SETI@Home, but that runs way faster on my GPU anyway.

    Yes.

They are exactly the same chip. The X9100 just has an unlocked multiplier so you can overclock.

I've ordered the X9100. No offense to anyone else, I appreciate all the input, but moral hazard seems to know his stuff, so I'm going to give the X9100 a go, seing as it's about $150 cheaper than the T9900.

Semirelated: Can anyone give any input on a 35W CPU vs 25W CPU in terms of battery life and heat? And how much would you pay to go from 2.26GHz @25W to 2.93GHz @35W?

Battery life shouldn't really go down at all because of intel speedstep.

I think i will be buying the X9100 too. Can someone advise what is the maximum temperature reached with this kind of CPU on the G51? Anyway, i will be undervolting the CPU and using stock frequencies (because of the high GPU temperatures).
