So this has bee hashed a lot. Whether to try to run a quad or dual. Quads still not working from what I have read. So I would like to upgrade to the best dual. What do I get? If you can ignore cost, what would you buy?

If it didn't cost almost $400 I would get the P9700 2.8 C2D. Much less energy and heat than the T9600. I've heard the T9600 is fine so long as you have good fan/cooling. Several people like the x9100 too but it's close to $400 too.

    Cheers,

Ignoring the costs, the best dual core CPU that would work on the G50VT is the X9100 (if you want unlocked multipliers) or the T9900. Both are 3.06GHz stock speeds.

I am currently in the process of modifying my BIOS to support more processors via microcode patches. I have access to the AMIBIOS Tools v8. I guess I'm willing to use my computer as the guineapig, so if anyone wants to help me add support for quad processors, modify the large OEM logo, or anything else, let me know.

Have you tried flashing the BIOS firmware to the G51vx? The chipset is the same (Montevina) and so it is possible that this will work and support quad core CPUs... although you might brick it ..

With these laptops (from what I've heard over and over again) the multiplier cannot be brought above normal, so there is hardly any benefit to getting an X9100 compared to getting the T9900

Interesting... does the ASUS laptop board have a recovery method that would allow the reload of the original bios if this failed?

T9900, pretty much the same as an x9100 but with a lower max TDP (35W vs 44W) which is quite important seeing as cooling isn't exactly stellar on the G series laptops.

If you do somehow commit the miracle of quad support then just wow :D

What I was aiming at is to inject the correct CPU patchcode into the G50V BIOS. It has been a headache trying to figure out what is what. So far, I have only found the location of both boot logos, the boot sound, and DMI/ACPI locations. Ill take a look at the G51 BIOS and compare the CPU patchcodes.

And yes, it is possible to replace the logo/sound with something else. I tested it eariler :).

EDIT: Oh yeah, I also successfully extracted / injected the "ASUS" logo for ExpressGate booting.

There are mixed answers with this. I would like to not find out...

You sir are my hero! I'd love to get rid of that annoying white intel logo that comes out at the bottom right hand side of the boot logo. :D

Other than that, I wouldn't mind changing the "Boom" sound to something more like a "Flame" sound. I think it'd be more pleasing to the ears, lol.

The Intel logo is located somewhere else in the BIOS. When I replaced the animated "Republic of Gamers" logo with something else, the intel logo loaded right on top of it.

Im going to start a new thread, because after comparing the G51 and G50 BIOS, they are very similar. I think we may have something here.

I seriously spent hours trying to figure it out. I came to the conclusion that the logo is buried away in some non-associated routine. :\

I once thought I found it, and removed it. I booted the system to find that there was no Easy Flash Utility :(.

I spent one day doing this...lol. Give it time... :)

    Sweet! Both are nearly identical?

    BTW,
what background (experience) do you have to be able to analyse the BIOS firmware? You must have a lot of low level programming experience..

    Pretty good price.

Maybe going for less since I have no buyers.
