Just wondering, would a netbook or a nettop be better for a file server/media center. They both seem to have the same specs, but the laptops come with a screen and mouse/keyboard. I will basically leave this thing always on and use windows live mesh to sync files across other computers. What do you guys think?

Personally, I'd use the one which used the least amount of energy.

I think netbooks will do that job very well. You may replace their harddrives with a 7200RPM one (and perhaps with a larger capacity) and they will be perfect for file serving.
