I'm thinkin about getting the Z71V..
Can someone give me some feedback/experiences/thoughts on different companies?
What are the company's reputations?
Which one has best cost/support/ease of ordering etc.?
-
i haven't bought from them yet, but they seems to be an okay company. YOu could see their reseller rating at www.reseller.com
Most of the people I've came across buying laptop lately was from
1) discountlaptops.com
2) proportable.com
3) istnc.com
I can't remember who purchased from geared2play.com. They often time reply to people on this forum too. So you could do a search for their thread and see.

I got mine from proportable.com.
They were quick and responsive.
discountlaptops.com is located in Las Vegas, an incicentive to vist them when you laptop go poof. hehehe But they are helpful and I've hear pretty quick service as well.
istnc.com same boat as the two above. Quick and responsive.
Pretty it boils down to this. Most companies that have high reseller rating, they are all pretty good. Ofcourse where are a few customers which have bad experiences with them. It is pretty much a hit and miss situation.
If you ask around, some will swear by proportable.com or istnc, or rjtech, or discountlaptops.com, etc. Each person experiences is different and for the most case, some are better than other.
If you ask me, i will say my experience with proportable.com have been great. No problem whatsoever. They got me my laptop in the deadline i need and was helpful on each step of the way.
You could go on AIM: proportable and talk to them. They are on most of the time. Tell them smilepak sent yahehehehe

I was considering one lately, but went with the T42. The cheapest I could find it was at DiscountLaptops.com. There shipping was the lowest at $25 and they offered a 2.5% discount if you paid with a method other than credit card. They have good reseller ratings. Plus they had a 15 day return policy with no restocking fees. Good Luck.
I was robbed by a sweet little old lady on a motorized cart and I didn't even see it coming.

I've been wandering around the web looking for Z71V prices, and the two cheapest so far seem to be geared2play and rjtech. rjtech is just a hair cheaper than g2p.
-
a note on RJ Tech: they assume a higher degree of computer knowledge from their customers than most other places, and since they don't issue their own warrantees, you need to deal directly with the companies that you bought each component from if something goes wrong. they're great for people who know what they're doing, but if you're a little shaky on your computer knowledge or want to go one place for all your warrantee issues, you might want to go someplace else.
-
Ok, dumb question: Do all these places assemble the notebook for you? If I take a barebone Asus on their site and I decide to outfit it with a certain HD, RAM, OS, etc., do they put it all together for me and send it out in one piece?
If they do indeed assemble everything, does it matter if I am super knowledgeable or not? I am at least knowledgeable enough to choose the components I want. Quite honestly I'm not a ton more knowledgeable than that, but isn't that all I really need to know if I'm going to order online?
Here, I can sort of answer my own question. At g2p, when you select an operating system it says "intalled, tuned" or something of that nature. So I guess in that case the notebook would be assembled and working properly. And g2p offers a warranty.
A random thing. Does anyone know if g2p installs 533 MHz ram? I assume they do, but they just say "DDR2 Pc-4200 Micron/Infineon." Is this 533 MHz? -

As far as i know everyone on asus preffered partner list (where to buy page) is a full service company. Some have resellerratings which you can read up on. pc-4200 is 533. You dont have to have any knowledge in this. If the time comes and you need to upgrade or add or swap something most reseller have the pdf files available for download and will always help you on the phone. I use the word most too kindly perhaps. Now if your shaky and inexperiened sometimes the pdf and phone support will not help you. You can find all the resellers for asus products on asus website where to buy page. For the most part all are very competitive but some just stand out naturally [^] -
That would depends. If you buy from a place like geared2play.com, proportable.com, discountlaptops.com, etc. They will assemble the notebook for you as they sell it as a BUILT ON ASUS brand. Which in terms give them the right to stick in their logo on the notebook if they wish.
If you purchase the barebone from let say coboc.com, you could select to purchase the barebone (which is no HD, CPU, MEMORY, DRIVE) and purchase let say stuff from newegg.com. You assemble yourslef.
Pro: You might find it cheaper this method
Con: Warranty is up to you as you have to send the warrant to which ever the compononet you purchase it from, vs sending it to one place.
Differences, really not much between the two other than that.

Question..
exactly how much cheaper is it to assemble a notebook by yourself?
what about difficulty for a first timer?
-
If you're experience with computer parts and assembling desktops, it shouldn't bee TOO hard... although each notebook is different in where things go.
For a first timer, I'd advise AGAINST it... you don't save that much (depends on where you purchase your notebook), but you usually save around 50 bucks I think.

I would agree with Aurora. Plus, one small mistake on your part can be very $$$.

You may save 100$ give or take. The con as smile said is the support. Asus support is good but not as good as dealer support. When you buy your own parts you run the risk of it not working period. In that case you dont know whats wrong and you have to return stuff for restocking. It all depends on your experience. Most people need a pdf file to assemble and disasemble the barebones. When you build yourself the 100$ you save in the long run may cost you alot more. For example. A customer spills something on the keyboard. We charge 25$ for the replacement as its physical damage. Mostly its just support. We also sell the barebones. We do not require customers to pick any components

Well the labor is free for 3 years from us. So if your mobo blows its 185$ give or take for the part if its out of warranty. Keyboard is 25$. LCd can be 300 or even more depends on the model if its not under warranty. We charge 49$ for 1 year extended warranty. Its well worth it. We dont charge for labor even if its physical damage. Ofcourse if its all under warranty there is no charge at all.

Lol should have mentioned its for existing customers, but for you smile it applies too. Though i doubt a notebook diety such as you will ever need dealer help to begin with.

I may be known as a sceptic but i highly doubt it will hit 3.0ghz for the sonoma platform. Anyone who can offer a glimpse of hope please prove me wrong.

Yeah, I think 2.4 was the max on the Dothan. I was hoping the next generation would be on the same socket support ahahahha...

Hey, what about discountlaptops.com? They carry the Z71V under the name "Chembook." Is there ANYTHING different between the Asus Z71V and the Chembook version? Different logo?
Also - Do any other notebooks on the 15.4" page compare favorably to the Z71V? For example: Chembook 2070 (Compal DL70).
Another random thing - 1.6 Ghz. Will the Z71V still hum with 1.6 GHz processor? I'd like to save some money if possible. -
And by "hum" I mean "go fast." Nothing to do with noises. [

These Pentium-Ms are very efficient processors... more RAM and a better hard drive will get you a better performance boost than a CPU clocked a couple hundred MHz faster anyway [

Thanks very much smilepak. I understand better now how the whole "built on Asus" thing works.
I also like what you said about performance/cost ratio when it comes to upgrades. I plan to "skimp" on the processor, but get a gig of RAM and a SATA hard drive (albeit only 5400 rpm).
Thanks for the input. []
