Hello, I have a g51jx (the lcd is led back lite)and I was wondering if its etter for my lcd or back lite to turn the back lite to its lowest position in win 7.

    -Thanks in advance

You mean, with the screen OFF, or brightness ON but lowest setting. Technically, the lowest setting is off, but ...

Anyways, you'll get an extra 20-30 minutes, the screen isn't exactly the low-power component in the g51.

if it was off you would not be able to see anything, am also talking about the longevity of th screen and not battery life.

    -Thanks again

Your concerns were more valid in the past.

LEDs last much longer than the old florescent ones or cold cathodes. I'd even say in the worst case, if enough LEDs burned out after... 7-10 years (hehe, do you still have this laptop at that point?) a new screen at $100ish on Ebay for your model isn't the end of the world either.

Since there are so many LEDs though, not just one big bulb, it'd be gradual and not a sudden, "oh no"--

I'd say put your brightness up to what's comfortable and enjoy it.

Just an FYI, you got me curious, so from the "LED" page on wikipedia:

... So maybe I was a little off, depending on how lucky you are... But that's 5.7yrs, including leap years :)

EDIT, After Thought: That's 5.7yrs of theoretical continuous use, so 7-10 (or more as the poster below suggests) of practical would be right on, actually.

If the backlight is off, you can still see the screen with proper light, it just isn't blacklight.

As for screen life, you're going to see a lifetime difference of 20 years instead of 15. Or something similar.

Thanks Lauski for your response +1 rep for you, I really appreciate your time.

Actually you wont see the screen, you might me able to find some details but you will barely be able to read text off of it, turn of your monitor and look at it that what it looks like with out the back lite lol ;)

Turning the back light down or on low, will both increase the life span of the monitor and it will draw less power. Win win if you can handle the low brightness. The worst thing you could do is increase the brightness

I can read mine quite well, if my kitchen light is on while backlight is off. Maybe you need to get your eyes checked?

WOW, i dont mean off in windows, I mean no BACKLITE at all, in other words OFF. I had a hp laptop with a broken backlite AND YOU COULD NOT SEE ANYTHING. GO break your back lite and tell me its perfectly visible.
