I just got a Asus G50VT-A2 with a Blu Ray drive. When trying to play a Blu Ray disc the drive spins a few times then nothing. It acts like nothing is in the drive. The drive plays anything else I put in it. This system is stock from Asus. I have restored the system to factory settings via a restock (Vista 64bit) and I have also tried Window 7 64 bit and get the same problem. I have tried using the newest Nvidia drivers still no joy. I would think that restoring the system to factory would fix it but nope. Why would the system come from Asus and not work? Calling them was a joke.

    Any ideas?

does it recognize that there is something in the drive when u go into my computer?

If it sees something, perhaps you just don't have software installed to play blu ray

Blu Ray disc shows nothing. Like nothing there at all. Any other disc it is fine.

I have WINDVD 8 BD installed.

the g50vt does not come with a blu ray.

I have read a lot of people with issues like this with the BD-5500S Bluray drive. I have not found anyone with a real fix.

I found a support page for the BC-5500S BR combo drive.

    BC-5500S | Sony Optiarc

It says specifically not to use the software there if your combo drive was supplied by Asus!

I would call ASUS and ask them exactly what to do. Don't let the rep off the phone if he gives you an answer, make him wait for you to actually complete it! I had a rep sit with me through a BIOS update, I don't think it really makes a difference to them and it makes the process smoother.

Sorry for doubting the drive in your G50 :). I suppose I was suprised they offered a BR in such an early laptop!

I think a fix exists, you just need to find the A) right software, or B) a firmware update, although that is unlikely.

Have you tried the full version of WinDVD 2010? This seems to work better than the included stuff (which is no longer supported).

    Cheers,

The drivers from Asus fail when trying to update it. The person today had no clue as to why. Then was told that my windows 7 upgrade should have included a driver DVD which I did not get. Said she think there is an auto update or something. Still doesn't seem right. Anyone have this second DVD I could download? After hanging up I was thinking if I restore the system back to vista 64 which is how it came the bluray should work. Guess what it doesn't. Call them back and was told the system came with bluray drive but I system doesn't play bluray disc. This makes zero sense. Why would they include a bluray drive and have it not work?

As for WinDvd 10 I tried the trial version and no luck.

In my experience the software on the site should be identical to the software on the disc (except the site also has updates).

Whats the message you get when the installation fails?

You would think ASUS would send you a disc if you have a serial number and are in warranty.

Try updating the drive firmware. If it's the same drive that is in the G50V-A2, that would be the Sony Optiarc BC-5500S.

Firmware updates for all ASUS notebook optical drives can be found here: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

It looks like the last firmware update for that drive was 1.E1 from 8/25/2009. Double check in device manager that I've got the correct model. If not, just search that same page for the correct model.

The software other than being an 08' version seems fine. Work on my other system.

The firmware program say "update failed" as soon as you click flash. I have read others not being able to flash firmware from version my bluray drive is.

The disc (which don't think will fix this) they are making me work with they windows 7 department. And wouldn't you know it they only have email support. Nice. They said last time I need to get this disc before they can help/troubleshoot more.

    From Corel's website:

" Please note that Blu-ray and PureHD upscaling features are not available in the trial until after purchase. If you have Corel® Digital Studio™ 2010 installed on your computer, you will not be able to install this trial, as WinDVD 2010 is included in Corel Digital Studio 2010."

Not an upscaling issue. Drives doesn't even see a bluray disc when it's put in the drive.

Someone out there have a G50vt-a2 second DVD that came with the Windows 7 upgrade kit from Asus?

Are you certain this is a functioning Blu-ray drive? Have you verified the model number in device manager and by physically removing the drive?

Have you tried replacing the drive with another internal Blu-ray combo drive or using someone's external USB Blu-ray drive.

The symptoms are the same as you get when trying to play a Blu-ray disk in a std DVD drive. You may just have a bad drive. Using a known good external will test your software.

We have the Sony 5500S in G72, G73 and my son's G50VT BB version. G50VT & G72 use ArcSoft Total Media Extreme and the G73 uses a full copy of WinDVD 2010 Pro. They all work fine and the drives were all added after purchase.

Even using the ASUS provided WinDVD 8 software allows some Blu-ray disks to play. I'm leaning toward hardware issue.

    Cheers,

I have removed and reinstalled drivers for. It reads CDs, DVDs, music disc fine. I know it's a bluray drive but when bluray is put into drive it spins 2-3 times. Then acts like nothing was put in. Looking at drive shows nothing in it via my computer.

I don't have access to another combo drive internal or external.

Well today after telling someone I WILL NOT get off the phone till we fix this I got them to do a RMA for the drive and the battery. I will be filling out the RMA stuff and see what I get back and if it works or not.

Still would like this second DVD for window 7 but we will see what Windows 7 dept says.
