Hi guys, i got the Asus ul80vt a few days ago [puts my brick laptop to shame in terms of battery life and performance] and the only thing keeping it from being the perfect multimedia machine is the lack of a Blu-Ray drive.
Is there a internal blu-ray drive compatible with this thing? I dont care what it looks like. Writing BD is not neccesary all i care about is Full HD playback.
Anyone tested this thing with a usb Blu-ray drive, if so how's the playback?
Thank you![]()

its hard to tell from the pictures on the inet but it looks like a standard laptop optical drive.. maybe pop out the drive and take some pictures but looking at this picture i can even see the stanard clips ( http://usa.asus.com/websites/global/products/Yt2NRqvmKZo3SnVW/ul80_ov1_new.jpg)
if this is the case any bluray drive will fit.
I just swapped my dvd drive out for bluray using a bluray drive from a gateway (found a great deal on it for 25$).. the faceplates are pretty standard and it just pops off.
if you open your dvd drive and look at the actual faceplate (the black piece with the button) you'll see the clips that hold it on. You can just pop it off and pop it on the bluray drive and you won't even see the difference. -
wasn't sure if the HL DT ST DVDRAM GU10N was a standart size drive... i guess it is. But do blu ray drives use the same interface as the one on the laptop? im not sure if its sata
ps:sorry for the noobish questions -
yea they are all pretty much standard, that model is a pretty standard model of drive you have too (looks like its used in gateways, acers, etc.)
looking on ebay it looks like you can get one for about 100$
eg.
HP Blu-Ray Laptop IDE Drive DVD RW DL 459173-1C0 UJ-120 - eBay (item 370402637057 end time Jul-29-10 09:38:24 PDT)
this one has the faceplate already off, you can see what it looks like without it. -
Edit: I see, thanks a lot

if anyone cares:
The ul80vt seems to use a TSSTcorp TS-U633A SATA 9.5mm drive
Blu-Ray for the ul80vt?
