    hey everyone,

i've just been thinking my startup on my asus w5a is pretty slow. i thought i'd make a poll so we can see what everyone else gets.

the link for the 30-day trial is:
    BOOTLOG XP

    ASUS W5A 1.73ghz
    1.25GB ram

    Startup includes:
    intel wireless stuff
    bluetooth/wireless console
    battery life

    that's about it.

    i get : 93 seconds

I have a 1.86 GHz centrino, and 512 Mb memory.
I have antivirus (NOD32), CHC, messenger and a few small programs. On top of this is all the network and wireless stuff.
I tested my boottime and got 100 sec.
After this, i used tweakXP (small program which enables you to tweak a lot of different stuff, can't remember where I got it but it's freeware).
Tweak XP rearanged my bootfiles and at the second test i was down to 88 sec!!

    That's quite a good improvement... :p

Yeah, the program is called TuneXP or DriverHeaven TuneXP 1.5. The function to rearange bootfiles is under the memory menu, at the bottom: "Ultra fast booting (rearanging bootfiles).

You can tune your boot programs manually too. Go to Start-Run and type msconfig.
Go to the startup tab. Here you can look at all the carbage that has been building up on your once so speedy notebook.
Most likely the average user will see a whole list of applications here that will seriously bog down your boot time.
Uncheck them all except the windows processes and restart, I bet you will startup at least 50% faster.

Careful: If you don't know what processes you are stopping here, certain functions may be disabled. You can download a freeware procesviewer to see what they are.

Anyway, you can always check them again if you really need them.......

Timed my bootup at 24 seconds. :)

I used TuneXP to defrag/re-arrange boot files, then I also set the HDD to #1, and reduced the number of start up programs. Worked pretty good!

its taking more than one hour. the 'busy' lil blue icon that lights up on the computers was flashing before but now has stopped flashing. but the dos program 'drfmnt' or something..is still running.

i opened task manager and it says it's using 99 cpu usage and opening the graph thing, it's using continuous 100%.

do i wait? or is it done?

How are you timing that? Like, from pushing the button to login/welcome, or until the computer is fully logged in and ready to go? Mine takes about 45 seconds from pushing the button until XP is logged in and my wireless connection is established (I have autologin enabled, and the wireless connection is the last thing that happens).

oh anyways it worked..i'm getting 19 second startup from logging in now..(that's from manual typing from typing password and pressing log in).

but it takes another 40 seconds to load windows and boot up everything until it gets to the log in screen

i dunno with the ppl wit 30 sec boots...is that including turning the notebook on and then logging in...or just logging in? cos 30 second bootup + log in....that's bizarre

Don't forget that devices hanging on the machine have a slowing effect.

I have a 7 port usb hub connected with camera, cd library, 200G external hd, iPaq 4700 cradle, MX1000 lasermouse........

If I disconnect everything at boot, I will boot very fast. But with all this stuff connected it takes a while for the drivers to settle.

My wireless doesn't slow down the startup at all, it just takes a few extra seconds to make the connection, but I can open stuff while that is going on...

I have found that the major contributor to slow boot times is AV software, in my case it was norton (norton systemwork pro 05, 04 and 03 before that) to be exact. This tripled boot times on both my laptops and my desktop pc. I have just recently uninstalled that beast and gone for the free AVG antivirus program. Boot times are back to a decent level, the pc is faster on the whole and the avg actually deletes virus's from email attachements, unlike norton which would say that found a virus but then failed to remove it?. I could list around 10+ other major problems I had with norton stuffing up my pc but wont. My advice is to shop around for a different AV program if you are finding boot times to be unacceptably long.

Since my current laptop has a dead harddrive and I won't be getting my new Asus W3V for another week or two, I thought I'd run this on my custom desktop. Total time was 53 seconds, which included me having select which OS to boot, logging in with a password and allowing StyleXP to automatically reapply my theme. It also seemed to me that the Welcome screen hung for about 10 seconds, which doesn't usually happen. However, the System Boot time of 2.4 seconds made me smile.

Just FYI, if anyone is thinking about d'loading TweakXP 1.5 from DriverHeaven, you may want to think twice. Apparently, alot of people are having system quirks after using it, if you can even install it. I read about how great it worked and tried downloading, but I kept getting error messages. Then I visited the DriverHeaven forums : here and folks are reporting some weird issues. Looks like DForce, the author, stopped updating the prog almost 2 years ago and MS SP2 has been causing problems with the programs execution.

I don't doubt this is (was) a cool utility that helped many, but I don't wanna bork my OS just for a faster boot. Any other input or ideas would be appreciated.

It would be interesting to know what drives people are using. For example, my 7200rpm drive will boot up much faster than my 5400rpm drives.

I have a 1.83 W3J I purchased a new 160gb Seagate 5400.3 perpendicular drive, I reinstalled windows and the boot was super quick 30 sec, and that was from the point of pushing the power button, logging in and when windows finished loading and the HDD stoped flashing.

Since then I have loaded a lot of software and the drive only has 14% free space, now I timeded strtup with bootlog and the time has going up to 1:30.

Like MrBamboo, I have 3 instances of svchost.exe that contributes to a whopping 80% of my start up time, get rid of those and I will be back down to 30 sec! but I have a snaeky suspicion it is because of all of the software I have loaded.............

My desktop boots up in 30 seconds right now... However with a fresh reformat, it boots up in less than 20 seconds! :D

    I'm running an AMD 64 3200+ @ 2.51ghz, 2GB's RAM, 2x160GB HD's etc.

    EDIT:

Those of you with slow boot times, here are a few things to try...

    - Download and run both Ad-aware and Spybot and get rid of all that spyware
    - Run Disk Defragmenter (Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Defragmenter )
    - Run Disk Cleanup (Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup )
    - Go to msconfig and get rid of all the apps that you don't need to boot at startup.
    ( Start > Run > "msconfig" > startup )

    - Then there are various programs out there that you can "tune" xp with like TuneXP. Etc.

For those of you with 30-40 seconds or lower.

What antivirus software are you using?

I'm using avast and its "On-access scanner" loads up really slow.

    AV running..... Nod 32

I was also looking on the net to see if I could trim down the instances of svchost.exe, i found this:

Theres several instances of svchost.exe running, this is normal but if you want to see what services each instance of svchost is starting, then go to the run command & type :

    tasklist /svc >c:\tasklist.txt

Then open the text file & have a look.

Although even doing a windows find, I cant find the output txt file?

I have a Thinkpad PIII 1.0 ghz, 384 mb ram and I average about 70 sec to boot up and start running XP. I have this thing optimized....most of the Thinkpad drivers are turned off, no sys restore, no anti virus etc.

I was suprised that all of your top of the line laptops aren't destroying my ancient Thinkpad. Wierd...

I think it also depends on the user, you are obvuiously very disciplined and keep things running to a minimum which takes some effort to maintain but does help speed up the system.

when I first installed and had a few programs and nod32 AV running it would boot up in 30 sec, from pushing the button to ready to use.

But since then I have loaded a heap of software and data on my laptop, so now the boot is 1:30.

I was reading last nite in some other forum sume guy just had the bare minimum of software 4-5 progs max, but to be honest my last laptop was a 6 year old Compaq so due to resources I could only run several programs.

lets put it this way I brought my laptop so i could use all of the resource hungry 2D,+ 3D, drafting, modelling, photo, video music editing progarms I have with ease.

its like when you see a really old guy puttering around in a V8 sports car, rpm never goes over 2k.... I always think.......what a waste ha ha :D
