Best way to boot quickly: don't boot at all! Use hibernate. I "reboot" my computer perhaps once a week, sometimes even once in two weeks. On 1GB of RAM with 5400 RPM HDD it takes less than 30 seconds to boot up from hibernation, depending on the amount of running programs it can even take less than 20. It takes even less to go into hibernation.
I really see no reason for not using hibernate. Even installing/uninstalling most programs works just fine without rebooting (although they all paranoically whine about wanting a reboot every time).

With: browser, email, IM, file manager, winamp (and of course antivir and firewall) running:
29s from power button press to poweroff.
32 seconds from power button press to password check screen.
(password only authentication, "logon" is instant after entering password). -

1.25GB of ram?? I thought the W5A supports up to 768 MB? -
Need some help. I have noticed that my windows boot up seems to take longer than it should. The XP boot screen runs through the progress bar 14 - 16 times. (And it is usually about 45 - 60 seconds before I can open anything).
Saturday I ran a Bootvis Trace and noticed that during the boot sequence a file KHALMNPR.exe is listed as loading up twice. I have learned that KHALMNPR.exe is the "Kernal Hardware Abstraction Layer" protocol? for my Logitech MX1000 mouse.
I use ACE utilities Startup Manager to enable/disable various things trying to start with windows that cannot be disabled by the software itself. Both ACE and MSConfig list 7 or 8 items that I have allowed to start with windows. In ACE there are two listings one called KHALMNPR.exe and the other listed as Logitech Hardware Abstraction Layer. Both make calls to a KHALMNPR.exe but the KHALMNPR.exe location for the Logitech Hardware Abstraction Layer is located in the /Program Files/Common Files folder and the other is located in the Logitech Setpoint folder. Anyone know why this would need to load twice? I tried disabling one or the other and noticed that my mouse loses some functionality (can't use the wheel tilt for Back/forward).
Would removing my antivirus (AVG) speed up my boottime any? I don't have it set for automatic scans I usually update and scan manually. Can you run AVG as a update/scan on demand only AV?
I will try to post my startup files and my bootvis/bootlog shots tonight.
Thanks,
Zack -

Oh ya going to 2 gb makes hibernate very slow.
-
The only "problem" with this approach is that it fragments the hdd considerably and you "waste" 2 gb of hdd space just for the hiber file.
However, I took the time to test my normal boot times after TuneXP optimizations and I went from 105.386 secs to 60.833 secs on normal boot, which I think is not bad at all, but still does not beat the 25 seconds mark with Hibernation hehehehe...
Oh, forgot to mention that I use ZoneAlarm Security Suite (antivirus, firewall, etc). Works great and it does not slow down the system as other solutions.
Greets!

My Z71v uses just under a gig of memory to hibernate. I know this because if I boot into Ubuntu after hibernating in XP, I reports just over 1 GB of RAM available (out of 2)
-
Hi djembe, but I'm not sure if I understad your explanation (english is not my primary language)
But the hibernation process does not take any physical RAM whatsoever, it works on a hidden system file called hiberfil.sys located on the root of the boot partition.
The hibernation file grows proportional to the installed RAM on the system and there's no way to avoid that.
For example, in a system with 2 gigs of RAM, the hiberfil.sys file (where the hibernation snapshot is stored) will be 2,096,564 mb! It does not matter if at the time Windows enters hibernation you where only using say 400 mb of RAM. Hibernation takes a snapshot of the whole 2 gigs and saves it to the hiberfil.sys file.
Take care!

does this work with vista? or is there another program?
-
41 seconds from COLD BOOT to the moment the "Stop Process" appears.
Another 3-5 seconds before all programs have been loaded. -
anyone know what program works w vista
-
man there's gotta be a program for vistathat works

Where are you getting this log file with times agaist the entries ?
My XP ntbtlog file doesn't show this info.
My Acer Ferrari 3000 (XP Pro - AMD 2500 - 2gb RAM) is up in around 65/70 seconds (42 processes) which I didn't think was too bad but talk of sub 30 second bootups I find incredible and frankly a bit hard to take in.
BTW: my hibernate is down in 13 seconds and back up in 20.
